Bernd Tesch has been working in this field since 1970. In this times I had to write letters and to phone or to visit the World-Around-Travellers to get contact / informations. Later Fax helped. In 1991 I visited the most famous motorcycle-travellers in Denmark, in 1993 in Britain, in 1994 in USA and in between many in Europe (France, Germany, Netherland, Switzerland) and a few in Russia. Many of  Asian Motorcycle Travellers have been at my yearly Motorcycle-Meeting for World-Travellers in april. I own the largest archive of  Asian-Mc-Travellers. In 02.1998 I started in internet to publish informations about Motorcycle-World-Travellers including those of Asian-Mc-Travellers  (>http://www.berndtesch.de >under NEWS). This collection was published 28th of may 2000 first time

To find all this and all my activities was a "life-long job" and cost me a lot of money. Since many years I am working in a new book called "Asien-Motorrad-Reisen" =  "Motorcycle-Asia-Travels". All books about "Asia-Motorcycle-Travels" which have been published until 1994 are published in my in German written, but very international understandable book called "Motorrad-Abenteuer-Touren" = Motorcycle-Adventure-Tours (432 pp, 500 pictures / drawings. About 264 Motorcyle World-Tours. ISBN 3-9800099-55-5. DM 38.90). I own all this books in all languages

Bernd Tesch has been travelling in Asia  "Atlantic (France) - Moscow - Transsiberia - Pacific (Russia, Wladiwostok)" and "Atlantic (France) - Black Sea (Ukraine) - Caspian Sea (Kasachstan) - Kirgestan/ Kasachstan- China"  himself. And Saudi Arabia - Jordania - Syria. But much more important is that he knows hundreds of Asia-Motorcycle-Travellers himself.

If there is shown "Book:" under the traveller and you want to read / order this you can check if it is still available:
>> http://www.berndtesch.de >> German or English version >> Bestelliste or order. If you find this book there you can order it. I offer about 183 international available Motorcycle-TRAVEL-Books for sale.

If you are an Asia-Motorcycle-Traveller or plan to do this or "on the road" already or know anyone who is not listed here, please send my any details, addresses, publications, homepages and most important: best pictures.

PLEASE give me at first a complete view like this BLOCK-EXAMPLE in the SAME STILE in English:

I am very grateful to all the individuals who knew that I am working in this field. They informed me since 1970 worldwide by meeting me, phoning, sending letters, later faxes and emails since 1994 about Asia-Motorcycle-Travellers. Without their help I could not get to this level. This internet-list had to be done in a short time. So please give me your "pardon" that there are mistakes inside of the informations and a lot in my language.

The universe started to exist somehow.

4.5 billion years ago
The Sun and Earth were created. The earth is one of nine big planets of the sun. Possibly out of change of gravity in the universe it was caused that dust attracted each other at first to smaller parts which are getting bigger and bigger. Finally becoming big rocks which attracted each other to big planets. Most of them were attracted by the gravity of the biggest part which is the sun. The nine planets could escape somehow the gravity of the sun and started to circle around the sun. All of the men / women who have been in satelits speak about the "blue planet earth" because about 70 % of the earth is water.

1-3 billion years ago
First signs of life on the earth.  After the earth got colder the first cells grew in microbe "Archeos"  (= das Ursprüngliche, the basic). If this cells came by meteroits from other planets or developed on earth is not proved.

200-170 mio years ago
The One-Piece-Continent Pangea (surrounded by the ocean called Panthalassa) on earth so far separated in two big blocks. The northern part was called Laurasis and included N-America, Europe, Asia, North Pole. The southern part was called Gondwana and included Africa, South America, India, Anarctica and Australia.

The "homo sapiens" existed.

In North-West-India between the rivers Indus and Sarawah a civilisation started. They had houses with three floors and flewing water in 8.000. This civilisation stopped about 1.500 before Christ for unknown reasons. Possibly a change of the climate was the reason. This was long before the Egypt civilisation.
Later the IndogermanpPeople came from the north and the inhabitants went south. MOst of this known by Epos Mahabharat which was was given by songs from one to the other generation.

The world-map of Greek writer Homer did not contain India.

Marco Polo (1254 - 08.01.1324) :
Route: Türkei - Iran - Afghanistan - China (Kaschgar- Peking - Shanghai).
30.10.1940). Tracking Marco Polo. (1964, Publisher: Routledge & Kegan Paul Ltd. London. GB. 1964. ISBN 0-87226-012-7).

This story is high interesting. I do not know if they managed to ride overland through Iran-Pakistan / Afghanistan to India. If YES this would be a sensation because the so far wellknown first motorcycle-tour overland from Europe to India was made from Austrian Max Reisch in 1933 !

Death of both unknown)  und Max Rischka (Geb. wann ?? in ?? gestorben kurz nach der Indienfahrt)
+ Germany - India - Germany.
26.03.1931 Short publication with a picture as an announcement in THE MOTORCYCLE: Fräulein Hanni planned to ride in India and return via Persia - Asia Minor and the Balkans.
27.03.2003 Next info by Evald B.: In a swedish monthly from 1931 I can read about a German lady, Hanni Köhler, who rode from Ceylon to Germany together with a photographer by name Ryschka. Do you know if she has written a book?
I got an e-mail from Bernd T. about Hanni Köhler. Looking through an old periodical "Svensk Motorsport" nr 11 from 1931 , on page 368 found a noting. In a rough translation it says: Hanni Köhler happily home from a remarkable longdistance journey. In the international Six Days 1929 --Austria-Italy-France -Switzer-land competition--- the nice german Hanni Köhter played a certain part as she proved to drive quite as good as the best male competi-tors. We think to remember that she got an award. Hanni, who is immensly popular in Germany has resently completed a very attentioned longdistance journey. She started from Ceylon, drove through India, Beluschistan, Persia, Irak, Syria and the Balkans back to Berlin and the Avus-track, where she was welcomed by a lot of people. Her partner was the photographer Ryschka, who experienced 20.000 km in the sidecar while Hanni was driving.
18.07.2004 The Ardie-expert Frank Grüneboom www.ardie.de (Rubrik > Bilder > Bereich "alte Bücher" > weitere Ardie Silberpfeilbilder aus einer Zeitung der 30er Jahre) offers pictures on his website and writes:
I do not know a book about this tour to India.

Winter, Hans (geb. 12.07.1934) und der Iraner Kourosch Eghbal (geb. 11.06.1936)
+ Germany - Iran - Germany.
Purpose of your travel: Kourosch lud mich nach dem Studium zu einem Besuch in sein Heimatland den Iran ein.
The best: Herzliche Gastfreundschaft der islamischen Bevölkerung.
The worst: Kardangummi in Istanbul defek.

07.06.1962 - 04.10.1962
Dumlich, Hans-Peter (German, born 23.03.1941)
+ Germany - Nepal. Hans-Peter (at the age of 21 years) rode solo on a Vespa 125 from Germany (Berlin) to Nepal (Kathmandu). He had asked Vespa to partially sponsor his trip but never recieved an answer. The scooter journey began on June 7, 1962 and came to a grinding halt (broken rear axle) on October 4, 1962 The total cost for the trip: $US 525.- and 1000 Indian Rupees. The journey cost me $ US 525,- and 1000 rupies out of my finally sold scooter. The speedometer was broken half the way.
Purpose of travel:
As a citizen of Berlin, cooped up in the city by the surrounding Soviet controlled DDR, and never really having had a chance to travel far, the desire to keep on rolling without the constraint of a nearby border, simply overwhelmed me. The thirst for adventure and the irrepressible drive to see what was outside "THE WALL" was enough motivation to take on any risk.
Route: Europe (Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, Greece, Western Turkey) - Asia (Eastern Turkey, Persia, East Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nepal)
Highlights of the journey: Wherever I went, I was absolutely astonished by the unexpected hospitality of the (mostly poor) people. However, on the other side, when touring the coast of the Caspian Sea, a Persian millionaire invited me for 14 days to be his guest. As a motorcycle or scooter traveller one day one might sleep in the ditch beside the road, the next day one might sleep under silken covers.
Low of the journey: When the scooter broke down in Nepal. Hans- Peter had to sell the Vespa in Kathmandu. He did not have the time and money to wait for a new axle. The 1000 Indian Rupees for the scooter enabled Hans-Peter to hitchhike through India and to buy a student-passage with a P&O steamship from Cochin (Southern India) to Messina (Italy). By  thumb and train back to Germany.
Conclusion and advise: Travel while you are young and single and never refuse offered hospitality. By now I have forgotten the fleas I picked up this way, but I have not forgotten that I slept in a "bed" while the owner of this bed slept on the floor.

Reier, Jochen (German, born 23.01.1945), homepage www.jochen-reier.com Books: www.lulu.com
Singapore - Germany. Jochen (Jo) flew together with his girlfriend Ingrid to Singapore , were he bought 1974 a Honda CB 500 Four (50 horsepower) duty free for the half market price of Germany. At this time it was the first japanese four cylinder-motorbike availlable (which was sold only two years later in the german market). In total he travelled 24.000 Km in four and half months.
Purpose: He was tired of beeing a busdriver, travelling many times (20 times as the driver of magic bus) overland from Europe to Nepal , always experiencing lots of trouble with one of his many passengers. “Only on a motorbike you realy travel alone, have contact with the overwhelming beauties of nature , also the people”.
Route: Together they travelled from Singapore to Malaysia and all over Thailand for 2 months (5.400 Km) on fantastic roads via Bangkok up to Chiang Mai and even into Burma (Myrmar) but were not permitted to travel to India overland by burmese road. So Jo (from now on alone) shipped his bike from Malaysia (Penang ) to India (Madras). Along the eastcost he rode his bike down south to Rameswaram and took a boatpassage to Sri Lanka . Passing a dangerous Tamil Tiger-warzone at night, he enjoyed a hot swedish traveller girl in Colombo. Back in India he describes a tragic traffic accident which almost cost his life by lynch-justice. Helpfull Railway-personal let him escape in a train-cargo-wagon.
So he seems to be a hardcore-traveller, from Goa on he rides his Sativa (name of his motorbike) with a plasterleg in which he integrates a kind of trestel on a ridersboot to be able to change the gears. The route goes on via Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran into Turkey. From Bombay on he is travelling together with an also experienced Motorbikerider, named Brami. From Istanbul they rode the so called Autoput through Yugoslavia, Austria back home to Munich in Germany.
Highlights : Everybody at this hippie-times wanted to find himself a freedom, different cultures and for sure not only sunny days but the sun, was enough motive to travel to Asia. The friendliness of the people enroute, hundreds of invitations were another great experience and the impression of Jo is, that bikies are admired by the people as the knights of all the adventurer and the explorer on the road.
The worst: Deffinetively the tragic traffic accident in Meysore ( India ) and having not enough time to stay over winter in Goa (South India), so the trip got unpleasant after Teheran ( Iran ) with harse weather, even snowed in pass-roads in Turkey.
Book-publication : www.lulu.com books: Sativa - Mein vibrierendes Glück.......
Useful informations and TIPS for others: watch out the traffic in India , and always smile werever you stop your bike, you will get back the smile which is most important for the travellers.

But in fact she is following him where ever he wants to go: "Magadan in Russia -Transsibiria - Finland:
They were the first riders I know travelling from Magadan along the BAM - railway through Siberia to Moscow and Finland (01.07. - 22.08.1992) without taking a train. As well they travelled on ONE  BMW R 100 GS: 8.273 Miles (13.239 km).
They learned to love the Russian friendship and the mosquitos.

1990 + 1991
Migliorelli, George (Italian / USA)
China. The trip took place in 1990 and 1991. I was living in Hong Kong and we received permission to drive from Hong Kong to Gwelin only five days. The next year we got permission to do Hong Kong-Shanghai for two weeks. We were one of the first people let in by bike after 1949 (thats what they told us anyway). They advertised our trip and when we arrived in Fuzhou there were several thousand people waiting for us, including the governess of the province of Fujian as well as old communist officials. We were several bikes and we had a police car in front and one at the rear for the entire trip.
06.05.2002 I got this information while George is on a Aound-The-World-Tour.

30.07.1992 - ca. 02.1993
Bettinelli, Giorgio (Italian)
+ Italy > Saigon. Giorgio wrote a book about his Vespa trip from Rome to Saigon in 1992-1993 with 7,5 months. He also did Alaska - Tierra del Fuego in Vespa 1994-1995. He has done other trips all on a Vespa but I have no other specifics. Il Raid Mototuristico means The Mototurism Raid, I can not explain it. "In vespa - da Roma a Saigon" Feltrinelli £.12000

Alfred Reetz and Bernd Tesch
+ Atlantik (Brest in France) - Pacific (Wladwostok in Russia). Both rode with two SUZUKI DR 650 Dakar 14.000 kms from Europe Atlantic - (France) via Russia - Transiberia  to Wladiwostok - Pacific. In total 21.000 kms. Back by plane to Moscow and by bikes back to Germany.
The best: "10.000 kms in Rußland in 45 days  through the same village (every house locked the same)" for only DM 200,00 (ca. 100 US $) all costs included. Unbelieveable friendship of Russian people. A journey in the European past. The SUZUKI DR 650 was my best enduro until this time: No puncture, no mechanical problems. 16.000 kms with ONE BRIDGESTONE tire in the back wheel.
The Worst: I prepared this tour 4 years since 1988 with hundreds of letters including those to German canceler Kohl and president Gorbatschow who answered "No"). But I did NOT give up. 1990-1 the Sowjetunion was spitted up in different countries. Finally I succeeded tricky to get visas.
Slides-Show at the the 15th Motorcycle-Meeting for World-Travellers: Atlantik (Frankreich)- Transrussland- Pazifik (Wladiwostok).
Book: Brochure "EurAsia - Motorrad - Tour 1992" (German, 1992). With motorcycle from the Atlantic to Pacific.
B.T.: Bernd Tesch (Alfred did not travel to the Atlantic) was the first human being who rode overland this way  "Atlantic - Pacific directly without Russian guides by motorcycle". The only one before was Robert Sexé in 1926 starting in Paris / France and then travelling via USA back to GB and the Paris".

??.06.1994 - Ca. 30.07.1994
Kelz, Theodor (Austrian, born ??)
and daughter Andrea Kelz (Austrian, born ??)
+ Austria - Kasachstan - China - Austria. Theo and his daughter Andrea rode on ONE BMR 100 GS from Austria (feldkirchen) to China (Pejing)
An Peking 27.07.96. Idee: Diesen hier in chinesisch übersetzen lassen. Mit $ US bezahlt.
Einreise in China: 06.06.94 Ankunft in Peking: 27.07.94. Ankunft zurück in Feldkirchen:? Genauer Strecken - Verlauf: ?
14,12.2003 Next request. As well for his 2 months motorcycle-tour in SAmerica.
B.T.: Theos passion has always been motorcycle-travels. Once the policeman lost his hand completely. But he did not give up and so he rode with one hand and a prothese and his daughter on the pillion from Austria to China and entered it. In ca. 2001 I heard by TV at first that he got a hand from another (dead) person. And the doctors of medicine managed to adapt this hand to him successfully.
14.12.2003 Theo informed me that he came back from SAmerica.

10.07.1994 – 15.10.1994
Förderer, Klaus (German, 26.02.1969) www.derklaus.de
+ India - Turkey - Germany.
Klaus travelled with his friend Claudia Liebe three months from Dehli to Istanbul. From India to Pakistan, Kaschmir, Kashgar and Kyrgyzstan by bus, then by russian sidecar bike URAL to Istanbul.
Purpose of your travel: Going overland to (or better from) India was a dream since he travelled with his parents to Iran when he was six years old. With "Hundred Days in Asia" his dream came true.

Alltogether: 5409 km by bus and 5648 km by URAL Bike: 11057 km
The best: This trip was full of highlights: Most of all the people and races along the trip and almost no other tourists and the landscape especially in Kashmir. Travelling in the CIS in 1994 was a special experience, before almost no information was available, thanks for your help Bernd!!!!
The worst: At the end we ran out of time, and URAL is of poor quality.

The best: Most of the people were very friendly and hospitable, but unbeatable in Turkey !!! The „feeling" to be free
The worst: We got in prison, without a reason, for 1 day in Kurdistan (Turkey). I got Malaria in Pakistan. The terrible traffic in India.

Purpose of travel: The idea was visiting the sister-cities of Hamburg ( Marseille - Prag - Dresden - St. Petersburg - Osaka - Shanghai ) Starting with four, but finishing solo. It was not the problem of that excellent bikes.
The best: After many tours to Siberia then by bike at that time and for many years longest tour in this region on own Wheels. Friendship with many good people. Visiting Republic of Tuwa by bike.
The worst: Stolen carburators in Moscow. And - because of heavy rains no chance to ride all Siberia on own wheels.
Book or publication: Still one of the best slideshows of this: transsiberia by bike. And others, as well as short stories, see appendix Useful informations and TIPS for others: Many on Eastern Europe and Russia.
Later experiences : Since then various times to Russia also by bike. This Summer 2001 again with some friends to Lake Baikal and Ulan-Ude by bike from July 18th to Aug. 28th.

Ellis, Heather (Austalian, born 08.04.19645)
Europe - Asia - China - Vietnam - Australia. The Australian Heather (37) made a motorcycle-tour with YAMAHA TT 600 through Transafrica in 1993-1994 (>see Africa). Then she worked as a motorcycle-courier in London for twelve months and covered a distance of 40.000 kms as a motorcycle-courier. Then she started solo a very rare motorcycle-tour via ex-soviet union countries to the border of China. She crossed China by train and public busses.
Her bike was transported by Chinese lorries to Urumqui in China and then to the border China / Vietnam by train. The Chinese authorities allowed Heather to take her bike 10 km from the Vietnam boarder, and she then crossed by boarder (after much hassles by both the Chinese and Vietnamese boarder guards) and rode down to Hanoi. From London to Vietnam 15,000 (approx. speedo cable kaputt).
Route: London (6/11/96) (worked in St Johan in Austrian Tirol until March 97) - Turkey (26/4/97) - Black Sea coast - Asabadjan - Georgia - Russia - Across Caspian sea to Turkmenistan -  Samarkan/Usbekistan (May 1997) - Kirgistan/Biskek - Kasachstan (Almaty) - Met 3 French Bike-Travellers with HONDA XL 600 travelled with them for three weeks in May/June. They rode across Russia to Mongolia. Heather left Central Asia via China/Kazak boarder to continue the trip back to Australia. In Vietnam, became ill and was running low of funds. She put her bike in storage in Hanoi and flew back to Cairns, Qld Australia. Heather plans to continue her world motorcycle journey in the future.Mobil Oil is sponsor.
Purpose of travel: To explore the world and grow from the experience.
The best: Freedom.
The worst: Getting sick and feeling weak in China. And China generally.
Book or publication: Awaken to Africa. Published Xmas 2001. Would like to complete Vietnam Asia leg back to Australia before publication.
Useful informations and TIPS for others: Pack your bike, put on your helmet, turn the key and ride down the driveway.......and then you will live a thousand life times everyday.
Earlier Experiences of big Motorcycle-Tours:... None.
Purpose of travel: To explore the world and grow from the experience.
The best: Kirgistan mountain passes, living in yurts, horse riding. Freedom.
The worst: China. Having to deal with the Chinese customs officials in Urumqui. After a week of being sent between offices and ready to pull my hair out yelling and screaming at them, they offered my a permit costing $1000US to ride my bike through China. I would be reinbursed the money once I had the bike stamped out of China, but would have to fly back to Urumqui to collect it. I didn't have a spare $1000, besides the permit would probably only have applied to the Northern province as each region has their own rules.
Since 1997 she is studying English and Journalism in Australia anf got her defree as a bachlor if journalism in may 2001..
11.1999 B.T. tried to visit Heather in Cairns / Australia first time, but she had just moved to South Africa somehow.
05.2001 Heather is married with Matt Engelbrecht.
05.11.01 Heather and Matt will have a baby in 2002 - I suppose. They want to vist me when they are on their "RTW" when they are 60. They forgot that B.T. will be possibly dead then.
B.T.:
She is the first person I know who managed this route AND entered Vietnam in 1997 by her own motorcycle coming from China.

Barr, Dave (American)  http://www.davebarr.com
Atlantic (Brest in France) - Pacific (Vladiwostok in Russia)
In another mc-tour Dave was the first who rode from the Atlantic (France) to the Pacific (Russia, Vladiwostok) in total including the Amur-River area. Dave got this idea visting Bernd Tesch in 1995 who travelled Atlantic (France) to the Pacific (Russia, Vladiwostok) with SUZUKI DR 650 Dakar. But Bernd and his friend Alfred took a train about 1.000 km to cross the swamps in the Amur-River area. Normally you cannot do this in summer because of too may rivers and swamps along the Amur River.
Purpose of tour: To get another Guiness-record for being the first riding ther whole tour Atlantic - Pacifik by bike without using a train in the Amur-river-area.
Route: France (Le Conque - Paris) - Germany (in Zweifall to Bernd Tesch) - Poland (Warsaw) - Belarussia (Minsk) - Russia (Moscow - Ufa - Chelibinsk - Irbet - Omsk - Novosibirsk - Irkusk - Ulan Ude - Chita - Schovorodino - Haberausk -Vladivostok).

Route: The Sub-Continent counter-clockwise: New Delhi - desert of Rajasthan - over to the boarder of Pakistan - across the Rann of Kachchh in Gujarat - around the knob of Gujarat - down the Maharashtra coast along the Arabian Sea -  Bollywood - continuing along the coast into Goa - Karnataka - Kerala - Lakshadweep Sea - until the bottom tip of India, where three waters come together  (Indian Ocean, Lakshadweep Sea, Bay of Bengal) - up the east coast - Rameswaram (the closest Indian land point to Sri Lanka) - Pondicherry - Madras in Tamil Nadu -  - Andra Pradesh - Orissa - West Bengal for Diwali and Kali Puja - Bihar's Bodh Gaya - across Uttar Pradesh - New Delhi.
The best: Everything between New Delhi 21.7.97 and New Delhi 11.12.97.
The people and their constant help and teaching. A better understanding of myself and others. Watching my motorcycle be put on a small, rickety boat by three wiry, little Indian men, then floated across the Ganges to safety on
the other side.
The worst: Losing my control, getting mad, and chasing a man down a dark alley. All the drivers in India. The oppressive heat and constant bugs early  in the morning at at dusk. Motorcycle accident running into a boy with a bicycle.
Book: Writing a book.
27.09.2005 Editing her book
27.09.2005 Asking for next update of this overview. And all journalist-details for a short review.

The Worst: ?? Not to be allowed to enter Pakistan without Carnet de Passage. Steal of money in a Pakistan hotel. To be carried back trough Iran by lorry without Carnet.

Köhler, Martin  (German)
Europe - Nepal. 10.000 kms in 21 days with an HONDA Africa Twin 750. 1998: The vehicle-master Martin (32) met me first at the largest worldwide fair for homemobiles in Düsseldorf/Germany in 1998 where I was invited as a paid mc-TRVEL-VIP. He sold homemobiles as the junior of the firm Köhler-Caravans in a good suit with a wonderful tie. He took a lot of my time to answer all his questions free of charge concerning to travel overland from Germany to Nepal in four weeks in december 1998. I told him that some others have done this before but I cannot recommend this because of cold and danger of accident because of too high speed: Germany - Nepal in three weeks....
20.02.1998 A one page story came out in Newspaper Westerwald-Sieg: "Always direction to sunrise" Ice and desert.
18.08.1999 phoned me: Martin made it with an HONDA Africa Twin 750 starting with 400 kgs. He had no puncture with the motorbike on 10.000 kms from Germany to Nepal (Kathmandou) with one pair of tires.
Route: From Germany (left 08.12.98, - 8°C, snowfall on the way sometimes)  to Italy 1150 kms in one day - from Venedig to Igoumenitza by boat - in Turkey to Ankara about - 5 ° C via Kataras-Passes (1705 m, -10 °C)  - until east Turkey 0 ° C and snow. He sleept in hotels where the friendly Turkish people aloud him to park his motorcycle inside - he reached Turkey bordertown Dogubayazit passing sometimes ice on the road after six days riding 600-700 km each day - Iran border took some hours - then totally 2.600 kms Iran with a five days transit visa and only in Iran letters written signs - first crossing mountains and then through redbrown steppe to Teheran - from Teheran in Iran + 1 ° - then more east the temperature is going higher up to +38°C through 600 kms long desert Sud to Pakistan - from border Pakistan Juzzak off road 700 kms through Belutschitan only 200-300 kms possible - in Pakistan Martin had a mc-accident because of too high speed (as Bernd Tesch said before !) but could go on to India (21.12.1998, km 8.100 until Amritsar which he reached  after 14 days, first "holiday 3 days") -  2000 kms in India on better roads than in Pakistan but he thought that 950 Mio people there where "on the same road" in one time. A total traafic chaos with cars, lorrys and animals. Sometimes he could only avoid an accident by riding in the next field of rice - Nepal is a paradise comparing to India with green subtropic forest in southen Tarai - Martin arrived in Kathmandu 28.12.98 after 10.000 kms in 21 days. Martin relaxed 8 days in Kathmandou-Valley - back in Germany by plane.

Schröder, Michael  and Rainer Würtele (German)
China. Michael and Rainer entered China by bike via Bischkek (Usbekistan) via Torugart to Tashgar (China) and could ride per transit to the Kunjerab/Pass. Michael is a redacteur of the German mc-magazine "Motorrad". Rainer has worked there before and works now at the outfitter Woick. The travel agency "active tours" sponsort both because they see this as a pilot-project for an organised  comercial-tour in the future. For both have been waiting at Torugartpass (China) a Chinese car with a guide, who really accompined them at each step. They even were not allowed to search for their own hotel or what they want to eat at night. They got permission only three days for transit China.
Publication: 1999 MOTORRAD
Michael gave a slide-show at the Tesch-Mc-Meeting.
28.08.1999 1st info about this tour by Norbert Lüdtke with Sonja on the road since some months by car: Germany - Usbekistan. There they sold there car and entered China with a visum by backpacking:
Acknowledgement: When Bernd Tesch and his son Min Tesch have been in China for four days in 1997 we already heard that some rich Dutch guys entered China with their Motorcycles some weeks before with a Chinese guy and car who was waiting for them on the Chinese site. They had to pay a lot of money for this Chinese guy from a travel agency. They wanted to travel through China to Pakistan. I have already prepared a written recommendation about CHINA-MC-TOURS. It is telling you all the stories how mc-travellers got into China since 1932 by themselves and the only ways you can ride in China with your own mc nowaday. I can send this by email. Costs DM 60,00 in advance.

The Burmesian Army did not let them in because of the problem in Bangkok even though we had the proper visas and papers for the bikes and also got hotel in Mandalay incl. petrol. Graeml, Peter A. (Austrian, born 07.12.1955)
East Timor. Peter rode 1500 kms until June 2002 in East Timor with BMW R 100 GS. Welcome to East Timor – the first newborn state in the new millennium.
Purpose of travel: Work with the United Nations in East Timor since April 2000.
Peter shipped his bike BMW R100GS from Toronto via Singapore to Dili after East-Canada trip in 1999 (6500 kms from Toronto – Prince Edward Island – Halifax – return).
Highlights: Tropical island with lots of palm trees and bananas, coconuts and papayas. Unspoiled coral reef and lonely sandy beaches. Scuba diving with dolphins, mantas and sharks, whale watching. Excellent biking possible in mountainous terrain.
The worst: Poor infrastructure after civil war (poorest country in Asia). Malaria & Dengue Fever for everybody. Tuberculosis spread amongst local population. HIV / AIDS already introduced.
Timor is the largest of the Lesser Sunda Islands located at the eastern tip of the Indonesian archipelago approx. 650 km north of the Australian coast. It is a tropical island approx. 9 degrees south of the equator with a wet season from November to April. Temperatures range from 28 to 34 C throughout the year. During the wet season the humidity is up to 80 %. The island is divided approx. in the middle in a West Timor and an East Timor.
East Timor’s territory, 14,500 square kilometers in size, is about 265 kms from east to west and is dominated by a central mountainous spine reaching 3,000 meters at its highest point. Most roads throughout the Territory require four-wheel drive vehicles and are excellent to drive with Enduro-style motorcycles. There are about 800,000 inhabitants, 200,000 living in the capital Dili. Official currency is the US Dollar. Official languages are Portuguese and Tetum. About 60 % of the population also speaks Bahasa Indonesia. English is understood mainly in Dili, in the rural areas communication is difficult.
Infrastructure: After the people of East Timor voted for independence on 30 August 1999 approx. 70 % of the infrastructure was destroyed, burnt and looted by the Indonesian Army and militia groups. Up to now East Timor has not recovered yet. Accommodations in various categories are available in Dili only ranging from very primitive (USD 15/night to USD 160/night – on a floating 4-star hotel anchoring in the Dili harbor). Outside Dili accommodations are available only in Baucau, the second-largest town. As tourism is non-existent (yet) there are no camping facilities available. On the other hand wild-camping is not prohibited. Since its declaration of independence on 20 May 2002 East Timor is considered the poorest country in Asia.
Car/Bike rental: Car rental is available through Australian based company (Thriffty) starting with USD 50/day upwards depending on type of vehicle. (Small) bike/scooter rental available at various places. (Big) bikes not available – mine is the biggest one on the island!
What to do: Snorkeling on the coral reef, scuba diving with charted yacht (equipment available), lonely sandy beaches and lots of nature. Fri and Sat 2 discos operate in Dili only apart from numerous coffee-shops and Asian-style restaurants. Outside Dili there is pure nature, bush and millions of stars in the sky.
Medical Services: Public hospital in Dili with some international doctors, medical centers in rural areas providing limited services. Travel insurance including emergency evacuation service recommended.
Diseases: Malaria and Dengue Fever. Prophylaxes for short-term visitors recommended, otherwise common sense. Tuberculosis is spread amongst the local population. HIV/Aids already introduced.
Security: In general calm (8,000 peacekeepers and 1,000 UN Civilian Police still in country). Movements at night at the beach and remote areas recommended in groups only, common sense.
Getting there: With Merpati-Airlines daily from Denpasar/Bali to Dili for USD 360 return ticket. With Air North-Airlines daily from Darwin/Australia to Dili for USD 250 return ticket.
On the road: It’s like in the Wild West here. No traffic laws. No requirement for driving licenses. No insurances. No technical inspections. No compulsory registration of vehicles (although possible since April 2002 with a low standard technical check) and of course NO mandatory helmet requirement. No recovery facilities. No workshops outside Dili. In Dili itself ill equipped road-side mechanics. Fuel available from Indonesian based company and Australian imported fuel for 45 US cents per liter.

??.02.2002 -??.03.2002 (insgesamt ca 5 Wochen)
Ralf Flachsenberg (German, born 14.06.1957) und Michael (Indienspezialist)
+ Indien.
Ca. 4500 km in 5 Wochen.
Purpose: Urlaub.
The worst: Eine heftige Magen-Darm-Ggeschichte.
Alles an Impfungen rein, was geht. Also lasst Euch beraten, was an Vorbeugung oder Reiseapotheke sinnvoll ist.
Vor allem darauf achten, was man an Nahrung aufnimmt. Cook it, peal it or leave it.
Ca. 60 Rupien sind 1,- Euro, also übersichtliche Summen.

27.10.2003 Update: Betreff: Unerwartete Zwangsunterbrechung...

Berentz, Norbert (German, birthday 02.05.1947)
- Around Asia. Norbert started solo with his BMW R 80 GS Basic his tour around Asia on June 2002. Until october 2005 he has covered 74.000 kms. fHe had one heavy accident in Latvia 3 days after his start. His thigh break right and total damage of bike. The end of of his travel starts with an accident in India / Punjab (hip-break, right pelvis). Norbert still wants to finish his overland tour westwards and wants to be home to Europe next.
PURPOSE OF TRAVEL: Do something good for myself (after loosing job and family).
ROUTE: From Germany eastwards across Poland, Lithuania, Latvia to Russia; here to St. Peterburg, Karelia, Archangelsk, 1000 km railway to Vorkuta (polar circle, short before Ural), with railway across Ural to Labytnangi, then with ferry boat about 2.500 km on river Ob (no money!) via Surgut to Novosibirsk; here visiting bikers meeting in July (Akademgorodok) and Altai mountains; then the long trail eastwards across Krasnojarsk, Irkutsk, Baikal, Ulan Ude and along the Transsib-railway to Cita and Never (Skorovodino); then upwards north to Jakutsk and along the Kolyma Trasse (via Tomtor, so called "summer Trasse") to Magadan; here looking for a ship to Kamchatka: first Manili in North, then Petropavlovsk in South Kamchatka; from here by ship 2000 km southwards to Vladivostok (along the Kuriles) and with help of the "Iron Tigers" per truck crossing the chinese border near Mudaniang, then driving at minus 15 degrees to Harbin (January) and then very quick to the warm and subtropi!
cal South-China via Shenyang, Beijing (mostly expressway, quick and safe but in China not allowed for two wheelers, sorry, but no problem). In Southeast China Guangzhou / Kanton, Nanning and Guilin. Then try to come with my bike (!) into Vietnam, but no success at all 5 border crosspoints - but a wonderful road along the Vietnamese border.
Border crossing to Laos (visa at arrival), 2 weeks short way to Thailand, then Malaysia (Penang!) and Peninsular Malaysia (Johor Bahru / Singapur), back to Thailand, Laos and then Vietnam (!), from the Laos side (possible, when you don't wait too long for the custom formalities, just drive after visa stamp); back to my beloved China (passing the astonished and not at all pleased Vietnamese border officers!) and across Chengdu, Lanzhou and Quinghai province (with lake) from north to Tibet (very fine road, no mountains and suddenly you are on 4500 m level !); no control or asking fo special Tibet permit, only friendly policemen and soldiers (they even lent me money to come to Lhasa!); from Lhasa the main road to Nepal (under construction! better take southern side road) along Mt. Everest base camp. Then via Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chittawan / Lumbini to India - and in the next two months via Pakistan, Iran, Tuerkey home to Europe (but that's all too normal).
Until now, short before Pakistan I have 74.000 km behind me (since Berlin) and maybe 15.000 km before me.
HIGHLIGHTS: I wanted to find new countries, people, cultures and now in India (after Pune and Osho experience) found to myself, better started the journey to myself, to my true inner self !! So it can happen in India, when you are mentally open for new experiences. Another highlight is the friendlyness and helpfulness of the Chinese, especially the chinese police (friend and helper in every critical situation); they like all foreigners and enjoy their new freedoms (on their way to an open society and democracy!).
THE WORST: That two heavy accidents at start and ending of my travel, but also that lighter ones in between - that indeed is the biggest risk and danger for every biker, nothing else ! Tsunami and earthqake in Kashmir did not reach me just in time, I had passed this areas already. And last not least that fucking not ending repairs: for ex. 7 times (!) the crankshaft, 13 times because of no charging function for my battery (indian workshops are the worst workshops, they are learning by doing and try and error - in my BMW case mostly error!).
Norbert tried to enter Pakistan coming from India with valuable Carnet des Passage. They did NOT let him in at the "Mustergrenze" Wagah-Border". So he had to retutn by plane leaving the motorcycle in India.
BOOKS OR PUBLICATIONS are not planned - why should I ? Only problems to find a publisher because the "market" is full with that stuff and everybody experiences in a different way - I did it my way and that was good for me and for nobody else.
TIPS FOR OTHERS: Don't worry about coming into China, Vietnam or maybe other problems (custom, Carnet, etc.); just "drive and see" (my motto), be optimist and have another option in case of no success; things change every year and all time and most for the better. And in Russia and China it is very useful / helpful, to meet some journalists (they are keen on you), so that you have one good newspaper-article with your foto in your pocket (I had more than 10 different), because not everyone there in the province does speak english - but they like you, they invite you and thus they can know you a little (with full biography!).
No earlier big motocycle tours.

Hofmann, Georg
- Plan China. Silkroad. Georg has the private plan to ride solo the silkroad. Because he is working in China for a German firm, he prepares the tour from China being there sometimes.
29.10.2002 Georg wrote from Yinchuan/China.
1. ich habe 1-Jahresaufenthalts-Erlaubnis

17.April 2003 - 19.May 2003
Plan next tour: 17.May 2005 - 21.June 2005
Stapsy, Anne (American, July 24/1939) and John Stapsy (American, Mar 9, 1946) Both organised tour: www.ridetour.com
+ China East -West in 2003 and 2004. Anne and John rode about 3.000 miles in 35 days on one BMW 1150GS (2000) from Shanghai to Urumuqi in April/May 2003 with three other bikes (two couples and one single rider, one 2000/1150GS and two 2003 1150GSAdventure).
We had a National Guide all the way through the trip (can not travel without one) and an additional local guide and driver for each province. Also a must have for any trip in China. We had five paying clients that went with us.
Purpose of travel: Fun, meeting people and seeing the vanishing culture of the western end of China.
Route
: Asia (China: Shanghai>Nanjing 352KM (218.60 miles) National Road 312 -- Nanjing>Xuzhou 359KM (222.94 miles) NR104 -- Xuzhou >Zhengzhou 351KM (217.98 miles) NR310 -- Luoyang>Xian 446KM (276.97 miles) NR310 -- Xian>Pingliang 307KM (190.65 miles) NR 312 -- Pingliang>Lanzhou 380KM (235.98 miles) -- Lanzhou>Xining 240KM (149.04 miles) NR109 -- Xining>Zhangye 347KM (215.49 miles) NR227 -- Zhangye>Jiayuguan 243KM (150.91 miles) NR312 -- Jiayuguan>Dunhuang 383KM (237.85 miles) NR312+ 313 -- Dunhuang>Hami 437KM (271.38 miles) NR215 to Liuyuan and NR312 -- Hami >Turpan 410KM (254.61 miles) NR312 -- Turpan>Korla 377KM (234.12 miles) NR314 -- Korla>Urumqi 461KM (286.29 miles) NR314+312.
Bikes were shipped by boat from USA (Los Angeles California) to China (Shanghai) and back to Los Angeles after the trip. Group flew from LAX to Shanghai and back to Los Angeles from Beijing. We did not get into the city of Beijing due to SARS. Only what could be carried on the bikes was taken by each person. Made it interesting for the three of us ridding two up.
Highlights: Having China to ourselves as it was in the middle of the SARS outbreak. The country was closed to groups from outside of China and inter-province travel by the Chinese had been stopped. We got in under the wire. Multiple SARS checks a day and the fear at the end of the trip of not passing the temp test. Having all of the national cultural sites to ourselves.
Worst: One accident that resulted in cracked ribs, damaged bike (but after 24 hours with a Moto team in a small village) repairable enough to continue ride, two mild concussions and neck and back pain. Nothing like being layered in Kevlar and everyone should at visit a Chinese Military Hospital at least once in their lives. Chinese neck braces are quite unusual.
Useful information/TIPS: Don’t try to get into China without the proper paperwork. Not an easy job. Hook up with a group that is familiar with the Chinese Government and go with Government approval. Check out our web site. It took about two years of interaction with the Chinese authorities and two visits without bike to organize and get permission for the trip. Antibiotics and pain medication a must for any trip outside your own area.
We hear about people who have ridden in China, but in the last few years it has become almost impossible to get into the country without the proper paperwork. The risk of having your bike confiscated is big.
We got an invitation from the Chinese Government for our group, Chinese Plates and Driver License for each rider. These papers along with the standard passports were checked with regularity. There are even harsher laws with regard to motorcycles in China since our trip. These large bikes are not allowed on the main highways and they are not allowed in the bigger cities like Shanghai and Beijing. We had to use "truck/lorry roads for most of the trip. China does not want motorcycles in their country. The trip is long for most people as it takes them away from their jobs for too long and it is expensive due to the cost of shipping the bikes, the cost of the guides and if you have a much larger group the cost would be even higher as it would involve being escorted through each major city by a police escort. Although it is expensive, our clients felt that it was one of the best tours they had been on and these people have traveled with their bikes through most of the world. I think that it was also the country with some of the worst roads they had seen yet. Not a trip for week end bikers.
Publication: There was one article about the trip in BMW owners magazine, the August 2003 issue. Not very well written, but adequate.
Earlier Experience: John traveling in 2000 from Japan to Germany on same bike.

28.06.2003 - 15.09.2003
Stahlschmidt, Götz (German, 04.07.1960), no website
+ Germany - Russia- Germany. Götz rode solo in Europe and Asia some 26.500 km on Yamaha XJ 900.
Purpose of travel: Long and open roads really attract me. When I watched the slide show of Daphne and Rob de Jong at the 25th Tesch Travel Meeting I started weeping when I saw the pictures of Siberia. I talked to Daphne and Rob after the show. Their statements helped me a lot. My soul had to leave and my heart had to return.
Planned route at first:
Karen and Götz planned to ride with one HONDA XJ 900 enduro. Route: Germany (Berlin) - Poland - Slovakia - Hungaria - Romania - Turkey - Georgia - Armenia - Aserbaijan and back.
Done route: Germany (Berlin) - Sweden - Norway - Russia - Ukraine - Poland - Germany (Berlin).
Itinerary: Stockholm - Kiruna - Lofotes - Northcape - Murmansk - Arkhangelsk - Vladimir - Nizhny Novgorod Kazan - Perm - Yekaterinburg - Omsk - Novosibirsk - Krasnoyarsk - Southern shore of Lake Baikal. Return. via Krasnoyarsk - Altai. The region, where China meets Russia meets Kasachstan meets Mongolia. Back to Novosibirsk - Omsk - Tshelyabinsk - Ufa - Samara - Orel. Lacking a visa for Belarus but having the Ukrainian I had to return via Kiev - Lviv - Krakow to Berlin.
Highlights: Listening to life music at night at a Russian military base in Siberia together with the commander of the base. The landsape of the Altai.
Riding XJ 900 in the mud with about 60 kg of luggage/fuel/water without hitting the ground.
The Worst: Partly corrupt cops in Ukraine (Welcome back to Europe, haha, no worries in Russia at all).
Medium sized Russian towns without culturel background. Worst town is Nikel. I cite Lonely Planet: "Even the slums of teeming Indian cities emit some sense of hope, while this particular suburb of hell seems to be past despising its own condition." Riding straight into the ditch on a straightforward tarmac road. (don´t you watch the birds too long!)
Books or publications: none
Usefull information and TIPS for others: General tips for beginners: read http://www.horizonsunlimited/tripplan/living/. Buy "Moto-Pack" from Bernd Tesch if you can read German. Any motorcycle is the right motorcycle. It will show you the right road.
Especially Russia: if you want to go there, learn as much Russian as you can. First of all learn to read cyrillic. I recommend Lonely Planet Russian phrase book plus a grammar in your mothers tongue for those who want to go deeper into the stuff. Take along spareparts going to Sibiria. East of Novosibirsk you won´t find anything until Vladivostok. Unless you ride a russian model.
How to open doors: I was often asked in Russian if I was riding alone. I replied yes. Next question you are not afraid? I answered why should I, I am in Russia. Works in many cases. Common sense makes you recognize the bad guys.
Earlier Experiences of big Motorcycle-Tours:
Well, where does big begin? We, my wife and I did a couple of trips 7-10.000 km within Europe. The most curious country we visited was Albania. If you´re lucky someone knows three word italian. Otherwise you gotta speak albanian. We didn´t.

Schwingel, Martin (German, born 31.12.1965)
- Overland to India
. Martin plans to travel solo overland to India with a BMW R 100 GS.
In lack of to much time and the rather spontanious attempt at trying to realise an eternal personal dream, I do remember two central sayings in India. They seem to me like THE pips of the Asian fruit. They say: "Maybe shure", by shaking their head in many directions and "plans are changing. All the time".
Route: Europe (Germany - Les Alpes - Italy (ferry, no Balkan) - Greece - Turkey) - Asia (Iran 10.09.2003 - Pakistan 19.09.2003 - India 27.09.2003) : - by plane back to Germany.

+ Europa > Asia. Germany > Vladivostok. Susi (BMW F 650 GS) and Achim (Honda Africa Twin) rode 13.500 km from Germany (Cologne) to Russsia (Vladivostok) within 3 months.
Route: Germany - Poland - Latvia - Lithuania - Russia (Moscow - Kazan - Perm - Ekatarinenburg - Omsk - Novosibirsk - Krasnojarsk - Irkutsk - Ulan Ude - Tchita - Chabarowsk - Vladivostok). Achim rode the full part from Tchita to Chabarowsk along the Amur River, Susi took the train !!
Purpose of travel: Curiosity. We both were infected by the travelling virus after our Africa Tour. And we hadn't anything special to do that summer in 2003. So we decided to go to Vladivostok and join the 1st Motorcycle Travellers Meeting "Facing the Ocean" in Nachodka near Vladivostok.
There have been in total ca. 550 out of the whole country including 7 Germans (including Mika Kuhn), one Polish man, one from Ukraine, one from Italy
Highlights: Staying three month in Russia and getting to know the life there. Meeting other travellers and russian biker. Lake Baikal.
The worst: Russian bureaucracy.

- Russia (Moskow- Novosibirsk - Irkutsk - Chita - Khabarovsk - Vladivostok). On the way back the bike went to Moskow by train. I took the plane and rode back home from Moskow in 2,5 days.

27.01.2004 Dear Bernd and Patti
Dafne has send you a letter did you received it? Anyway we are fine and yesterday we crossed Lake Baikal> The first ones this year and as I understood well I was the firts solo biker who did this ever. The ice is not thick but strong enough for us. We drank the last drop of your RUM (Thanks again) with a forrester in the hamlet of Dasha. Dasha is a very remote 30 houses villages at the shore of Lake Baikal and can only be reached by boat (in summer) or over the ice (NOT IN SUMMER). We took some mail with us from Dasha to be posted in Severobaikalsk. We spend the night on the ice in our tent. The lake was making a lot of noises during the night on to be honest I was not very sleepy that night.
We are fine and maybe we will pass on our way back to Holland in Februar
24.-25.02.2004 Dafne and Rob were another time our guests at home in Hammer and stayed the last day / night with us before they wenr home safely after their Siberia-mc-tour.
16.-18.04.2004 They offered me kindly to give a slide-show at the "26th. Motorcycle-Meeting for World-Travellers":
Jong, Dafne and Rob. "Siberia = Icefresh = Eisfrisch". www.OverhetIJS.nl and www.ICEride.com They rode 11.000 kms on roads, plus 1.000 kms on lake Baikal in Russia and another 1.000 kms on frozen rivers with temperatures down to - 38°C. Both were sponsored by YAMAHA Netherlands with two YAMAHA XT 600 E. Dafne and Rob had the idea to attach a sidecar to one XT and additionally to have the chance to fix the other XT to the sidecar. So they had "two-wheel-drive" on the ice. German Helmut Herrmann from STERN-Gespanne http://www.gespannservice.de sponsored them by realising this idea. Route: NL- Germany - Tchechei - Poland - Belarussia - Russia and back. One of the Highlights was to ride on ice on lake Baikal (650 long and max 70 kms wide) where nobody has been before.

Earlier Experiences of big Motorcycle-Tours: Together nearly all over Europe. Maximum 10.000 km a trip. Götz rode alone Berlin > Northcape > Baikal Berlin, 26.500 km, in 2003.
03.10.2004 Here a part of their summary of their new route: Germany > Ex-Sowejtunion > Turkmenistan > Turkey:Taschkent > Visum für gen Turkmenistan als "letzte ??" bewillligt bekommen.
1200 km mit 30 (i.W. dreissýg) Polizeikontollen.
Solchen Versprechungen sollte man NICHT glauben.
Georgien: Back to Georgia we met the georgýan biker.

Then via Bago to Toungoo, in the Jungle of Bago Yoma to see working elephants. North via Jamethin to Kalaw in the Mountains of the southern Shan State. Then to the beautiful Inle Lake. Road 411 north, to Pyin U Lwin, then to picturesque Hsipaw. To Mandalay, and to the Pagodes of Bagan, after 4 1/2 weeks back to Yangon. Although I was the only motorcycle on the road in Yangon and didn’t get stopped.

Rusch, Karen (German, 1960) und Goetz Stahlschmidt (German, 04.07.1960). No website
With two BMW F 650 GS Dakar Karen and Goetz rode 16.260 km in 5 different countries.
Purpose of travel:
Back to the big meadow in Siberia. This year we can only afford two, maybe 2,5 months off. Having been nearly all over Europe we had to choose a non-European goal. Middle East is too hot during the northern hemisphere summer. Pakistan and India as well too hot. So northern Asia is the choice. Karen has never been to Lake Baikal. When Goetz was there it was raining all the time.
The long and lonesome roads attract us. Once in a while a fresh shashlík from the spit, yum. Being able to crash out nearly everywhere is a nice feat once you´ve left Europe behind.
Earlier Experiences of big Motorcycle-Tours: Together nearly all over Europe. Maximum 10.000 km a trip. Goetz rode alone Berlin > Northcape > Lake Baikal >Berlin, 26.500 km, in 2003. Karen and Goetz rode together Berlin - Central Asia - Berlin, 25.000 km, in 2004 (Search in this website).
Route: Germany (Berlin) - Poland - Belarus - Russia (Moscow - Ural - Novosibirsk) - heading SE into Mongolia. There the hard road ant time one started: 1300 km within 3 weeks in NW Mongolia, including 6 days for backtracking in NW Mongolia. It took us 6 days to backtrack 300 km. The road/path/way itself was getting too hard to keep the goal up. In terms of time. And in terms of abilities to ride. No roads, no bridges. No place to buy chow. No fuel. Many a no. We got back via Russia - Belarus - Poland. No worrries once leaving Mongolia.
The best: we learnt this year what we we better do NOT do together. The muddy roads for example.
The worst: How many a no´s are we able to cope with / are able to change your life? With hindsight it was not the accidents with there physical contacts (flesh and blood only) but the psycological experiences which made us wonder.

Useful informations and TIPS for others: 1. If you have little time don't waist it doing all the preparation and organisation yourself but join us on our next Motorcycle Caravan. 2. If you join a group treat the other participants as your colleagues. Do not try to become friends with everyone on day 1; it does not work. 3. Decide what you want to do and see on route yourself instead of letting the others decide for you and take enough time for yourself every day.

01.06.2009 - 29.06.2009
Ari Ryynänen (Finn, birthday 31.07.1962)   http://highwayfever.blogspot.com/
+ Finland - Vladivostok - Finland. I rode with Honda Varadero XL1000V 2006  Finland-Vladivostok-Finland on June 2009 on my own (no company). I took 16 days to ride to Vladivostok and 13 days back to Finland. I spent 13 nights in tent on roadside, 13 nights in gastinizas and 3 nights in nice russian's homes. I was lucky, only one technical problem, rear wheel bearings. I carried spares, labour 100 rbl in russian garage. No punctyres, no problem with milis, no thiefs, etc. Total cost in russia 1300 €, that includes lodging, food, gas. In total km 21.741.
App. 10 hours of riding each day and 750 km. A few have asked, how much did this cost. I was prepared with a budget of 3000 euros, but I got away cheap. Gas, accommodations and food cost me around 1300 euros. 4000 rubles for the oil and souvenirs.
I'll definitely always remember the Russian people, they were so friendly and helpful. Their hospitality was really amazing.
Purpose of your travel: Explore to unknown, huge Russia.
Route: Europe (Parkano in Finland- Niirala- Pitkaranta- Vologda-Yaroslav- Nizny Novgorod- Kazan) - Asia (Ufa- Kemerovo- Novosibirsk- Krasnoyarsk-Irkutsk- Ulan Ude- Chita- Khabarovsk- Vladivostok- Knabarovsk- Chita- Ulan Ude- Irkuts- Krasnoyarsk- Novosibirsk- Kemerovo- Ufa)- Europe (Kazan-Nizny Nowgorod- Moscow- St. Petersburg- Finnalnd (Vyborg- Lappeenranta- Parkano).
Highlights: Friendly Russians, great rivers in Siberia , wilderness on east of Chita
The worst: Dusty gravel roads Chita-Khabarovsk
Useful informations and TIPS for others: Take a contact with locals, trust your skills and bike.
Information: I am a forestry engineer and work for Finnish forest research institute. I live here in western Finland, small town Parkano with 7000 inhabitants.
Russia is very exciting country. I am planning to go there in the future by bicycle, it is slower way to see that great country. I met some great german bicyclers near Lake Baikal, they are great globetrotters too.
I have all of my 500 photographs from trip on internet http://picasaweb.google.fi/aryynane/Vladivostok0902#
If you have some questions, don't hestitate to ask. You are doing great job with your website.Thank you

1999-2000
Then 1999-2000 for 14 months we rode 60000km from Prudhoe Bay in Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego via Canada - USA - Mexico - Guatemala - El Salvador - Honduras - Nicaragua - Costa - Rica - Panama - Colombia - Ecuador - Peru - Bolivia - Chile and Argentina. It was not the most direct route you could do!This was on the GS and anF650.
I have many pictures from my trips but they are all slides. It was great to hear from you as Ihave heard much about you from the German bike riders we have met over the years.
If you want any more information on any of this please contact me .
I hope you will keep in touch.
Best wishes,Ian Freeman
