South-America - Motorcycle - Travels

= Süd-Amerika Motorrad-Reisen Overland to, in and around South-America
by Motorcycle First list in internet about "South-America
by Motorcycle".
02.1998: A part of this you find already published under: >www.berndtesch.de >NEWS (now deleted).
28.05.2000: This collection
was first time published in internet: >www.berntesch.de >continents > South-America.
I would be grateful if you could help to keep this update ! So far you find
many language and grammar mistakes inside because of lack of time. Pardon. Will
be corrected and updated with more Travellers in future. Bernd
Tesch has been working in this field since 1970. In this times I had
to write letters and to phone or to visit the World-Around-Travellers to get contact
/ informations. Later Fax helped. In 1991 I visited the most famous motorcycle-travellers
in Denmark, in 1993 in Britain, in 1994 in USA, in 1999 / 2000 in Australia and
in between many in Europe (France, Germany, Netherland, Switzerland). Many of
famous South-America Motorcycle Travellers have been at my yearly Motorcycle-Meeting
for World-Travellers in april. I own the largest archive of South-America
Mc-Travellers. It is very hard to find informations about the history: "Exploring
S-America by Motorcycle-Travellers". Do you motorcycle-travellers bewteen 1900-1950
?? To find all this and all my activities was a "life-long job" and cost me
a lot of money. Since many years I am working in a new book called "Süd-Amerika
Motorrad-Reisen" = "South-America Motorcycle Travellers". All books
about "South-America by Motorcycle" and "Alaska-Tierra del Fuego" which have been
published until 1994 are published in my in German written, but very international
understandable book called "Motorrad-Abenteuer-Touren" (432 pp, 500 pictures /
drawings. About 264 Motorcyle World-Tours. ISBN 3-9800099-55-5. DM 38.90). I own
all this books in all languages. If there is shown "Book:" under the traveller
and you want to read / order this you can check if it is still available: > http://www.berndtesch.de > German / English version > Bestelliste or > Order. If you find this book there
you can order it. I offer about 200 international available Motorcycle-TRAVEL-Books
for sale. If you are a South-America-Traveller
or plan to do this or "on the road" already or know anyone who is not listed here,
please send my any details, addresses, publications, homepages and most important:

your tour):... I am very grateful to all the individuals who knew that I am
working in this field. They informed me worldwide by sending letters, later faxes
and emails since 1994 about World-Around-Travellers. Without their help I could
not get to this level. This internet-list had to be done very quick, because I
did not have enough time. So please give me your "pardon" that there are mistakes
inside of the informations and a lot in my language. At least you will never have
seen such a huge collection of informations. Bernd Tesch

The universe
started to exist somehow.
4.5 billion years ago
The
Sun and Earth were created. The earth is one of nine big planets of
the sun. Possibly out of change of gravity in the universe it was caused that
dust attracted each other at first to smaller parts which are getting bigger and
bigger. Finally becoming big rocks which attracted each other to big planets.
Most of them were attracted by the biggest part which is the sun. The nine planets
could escape somehow the gravity of the sun and started to circle around the sun.
All of the men / women who have been in satelits speak about the "blue planet
earth" because about 70 % of the earth is water.

(?)" in New Mexico ca. vor 8.000 Jahren.

Harley-Prospektmaterial, Plakate, Anzeigen, Schriftwechsel, teils in spanischer Sprache.

Uwe N. Illgner, (German, birthday 09.02.1956)
?? Uwe rode around in Europe with a 50 cc lightweight sine 1973. Different tours in different countries.
1975 I travelled with a Volkswagen Car to Nepal: Europe - via Turkey - Iran - Afghanistan - Nepal.
1976 I made several trips to European Countries. More details please.
1977 (April) By bike ??? I rode for four months To India. Europe - via Jugoslavia - Turkey - Iran - Afghanistan - Pakistan - India (Goa). I sold the bike in Goa. On the way back in Teheran/Iran I purchased a Harley-Davidson Police Bike from 1963 and rode this way back to Germany.
1980 (January) With a 1947-Harley-Davidson-Chopper I rode within three months in USA west-east: USA (Los Angeles) - via Mexico - Arizona - New Mexico - Texas - Louisiana to Florida.
1981 I rode around for two months in California and Arizona.
In the following years I rode several times through the south of USA.
1980 In Istanbul/Turkey I bought a 1947 Indian Chief with a sidecar. Since then I yearly made several journeys to other European countries with friends of old Motorcyles. Till today I rode over 250.000 Kilometres in Europe.
My future plan is to travel through South America on my Harley-Davidson 1956 Panhead on traces of ENRIQUE PONTOLILLO.
08.11.2009 Uwe Illgner rief mich erstmalig an.

an Zwischenfällen äußerst reichen Asien-Reise.
Route :
USA - Kanada - Alaska bis zum Polarkreis - Mexiko - Guatemala - Costa Rica - Panama
- Kolumbien - Ekuador - Peru - Bolivien - Chile - Argentinien - Patagonien - Feuerland
(Ushuaia)- Uruguay und Brasilien.
Feuerland:
Feuerland Lago Fagnano - Ushuaia. In Bolivien haben sie den ersten Höhen-Weltrekord
für Roller aufgestellt : 5300 m über dem Meeresspiegel. 231 S. 8 SW-Fotos.
1 Kartenskizze.
Verlag: Albert Müller Verlag. Rüschlikon bei Zürich.
Schweiz. 1955. Bibliothek.
Dasselbe Buch mit identischem Inhalt hat es 1956
noch als Paperback-Ausgabe und anderem Umschlag gegeben.
B.T.:
Jean-Claude Bois (den B.T. persönlich kannte) und Michel Le Clerc bewältigen
als erste Motorrad-Fahrer die Route Alaska-Feuerland, wobei sie das Darien-Gap
umschifften.
erreichen.

Jentsch, August Dr. and Wolfram
Hannig (Austrians)
Süd-Amerika. Ushuaia.

Kreuselberg, Hans and Dieter
Grund (Germans, died in ..)
Around South-America.
Hans travelled a lot by backpacking and car in four continents before he travelled
in South America. HIs journeys included visits in 70 countries including a tour
Around Africa by car. Unfortunately Hans did not write down even a view about
this historical Africa tour, but I remember that he showed me once his tour on
a map visiting me. He even crossed Angola. He was a real pioneer Globetrotter
because he was the first who circled South-America by car (Volkswagen) and possibly
Africa by car as well. Hans published in the time of coming Globetrotter guides
his first book "Südmerka": Die erste Rundreise und Amazonasdurchqquerung:
71.271 kms (30.000 kms were off-road) in december 1975. Later he updated this
book.
Hans visited the Globetrotter-Meetings of Bernd Tesch several times
and was a personal globetrotter-friend of Bernd Tesch. Hans passed away about
ca. 1994 and nobody took care of his death. Unfortunately he was not married and
has no relations I know.
B.T.2002: I knew
Hans very good. He was intensively interested in long world-tours. He has been
in Asia and circled nearly Africa in total even before he travelled in South America.
Hans was the first who circled South America by car. Only very few motorcycles
have circled South America in total.

Günter Schöfer (German, born ??)
+ Chile > USA mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln in 9 Monaten.
Route: Chile.Bolivien. Peru Kolumbien. Equador. Kolumbien. Salvador. Gutemala. Belize. Mexiko. USA.
Coole Tage in Belize.
Highlights: Atacama Wüste, Machu Pichu, Inca Trails, etc. etc. … Was aber wäre all dies ohne diese tollen Latinos. Die Bewahrung! Ich bin weder beraubt noch überfallen worden. Die 9 Monate haben mich all inkl. damals 7000,- DM gekostet. Unübertreffbare Kosten-Nutzen-Relation. Beste Investition meines Lebens.
The Worst: Höhenkrankheit, div. andere Krankheiten.

Seidel,
Rainer (German, born 01.06.55)
Ttransfer of a BMW GS 1150 from Germany
to Brasil (Natal Rio Grande Norte). Transport with Lufthansa Cargo to Buenos Aires.
From B.A, to Zarate to first possible direction heading north and crossing the
Rio dela Plata. Than continuing nearly parallel to the Uruguayan border to enter
Brasil at Sao Tome (Border closed by Brasilian authority due to the Movimento
sim Terra). So I went up catching the next possible way to get into Brasil. Those
days Argentina was very expensive, and Police kept me paying for a speeding ticket
asking for more than 500 US / Peso... I finally payed 50 US$ for driving same
speed than the cars there... In Brasil all very much cheaper including the Gasoline.
I continued via Passo Fundo, Curitiba, Sao Paulo, to Caragautatuba, heading up
the coastline all the way via Rio, Vitoria, and tooked a break in Porto Seguro
(Bahia) It was above 40 degress C when I drove further up to Salvador, and kept
on the Linha Verde via Aracaju and Maceio. On the coastline to Recife, I changed
direction, and in Palmares I went towards the countryside visiting Caruaru in
Pernambuco, which is known for the largest market of textile and arts. I went
on to recife, and up north via Joao Pessoa, until I reached my destination Natal.
7811 Km on one pair of Conti TKC 80 tires !!!!!!!) no flad tire..where I use to
change tubes or tires in previous trips sometimes 3 times a day... I left the
BMW (enforced by Touratech and MTech parts ) in Natal to be able for the next
planned trip later that year..as I had to go back to Germany for work..

Useful informations and TIPS for others: In 2001 it is too long to offer

B.T.: Peter - always being
very modest - called me once that he has his book ready about South America and
wanted to print only 100 books. But I recommended him to print 500 books after
I helped him a little bit to organise the sale. His in German written book "Südamerika"
(40 b&w-fotos. 246 pp. 6 route-maps) is his personal story with all his feelings,
what he saw and about what he was thinking while travelling riding with a companion
and meeting the inhabitans. But the book includes as well tips for sightseing,
routes and sleeping places. Finally a love-story. Peter has travelled as well
by by ship, bus, railway.
Peter has been several times at the Tesch-Mc-Meeting" and my private guest. I know that in his mind still is the secret plan to write
a book about his earlier African-Mc-Tour...

Asmuth,
Karl-Heinz (= Tango-Kalle, born 1952) (German)
Argentina.
Chile. BMW F 650. Karl-Heinz rode solo Buenos Aires - Ushuaia - Santiago
de Chile - Buenos Aires. 15.000 kms (9.000 kms asphalt, 6.000 kms dirt route).
Route: Buenos Aires via la routa tres to Ushuaia - Punta Arenas -
Torres del Paine - glacier Perito Moreno - via la routa cuarenta to Chile Chico
- Isla Chiloe - Puerto Montt - vulcan Villarica and vulcan Orsorno - San Martin
del los Andes - Santiago de Chile - Mendoza - Cordoba - Azul - Buenos Aires.
There I took Tango lessons.
The best: The widness and the incredible
light of Patagonia and the unbelievable landscape of the Andes. I am very impressed
of the kindness and hospitalty in Argentina and Chile. Now I have a lot of new
friends there. For myself I have found inner fredom and tranquillity.
Reasons
for travelling: Motorcycling and dancing tango. In 1996 "Kalle" had several
times a dream, that he should travel by motorcycle to Australia and South-America.
This, although the computer-expert never wanted to ride a motorcycle. In 1997
he has been for some weeks in Argentina and Chile, dancing Tango with enthusiasm.
Here he loved to meet the people there. His special wish is to ride off road in
Carretera Austral/Chile. At 31st of december he will celebrate the millenium in
Usuhaia.
25.06.99: Kalle visited Bernd Tesch for recommendation.

Purpose of your travel: to get to know the continent, its landscape, its people, their way of life and their culture ...
Route: South America ( Chile - Tierra del Fuego - Argentina - Bolivia - Peru - Ecuador - Colombia - Venezuela - Colombia)
The best: Impossible to tell in a few words all the positive experience of the journey as a whole, the freedom.
The worst: Hearing about the deadly accident of the fellow biker Klaus Mertmann in Peru. Always having to say good-bye to all the nice and friendly people we met on the road.
Next planned experience: crossing South-America by horse, starting in
sept/oct '09
or later.
Route: Chile - Tierra del Fuego - Argentina - Bolivia - Peru - Ecuador - Colombia - Venezuela. See Bernd Tesch´s website South-America for more details.

Argentina and Chile. South America. Technical Writer Kerstin rode with
a XT600K about 10.000km from Buenos Aires south along the ruta 3 to Ushuaia, then
up north along ruta 40 to Santiago de Chile. One of many great experiences was
learning Spanish language by talking with the people every day.
Route:
Mc (Hellmanns, price ca. 3500 DM for 2 XT600) and person (Aerolineas Argentina,
price ca. 1400 DM) with different planes from Germany to Argentina (Buenos Aires.
By mc to Azul - Peninsula Valdez - Ushuaia/Tierra del Fuego - Punta Arenas) -
Chile (Torres del Paine - Glaciar Moreno - Lago B. Aires - Coihaique - Chaitèn
- Puerto Montt - Osorno - Villarica - Lanin NP - Valparaiso - Santiago) - by different
planes mc and persons back to Germany.
The best: Torres del Paine, lonesome
roads
The worst: big cities
Important useful informations for
others: The customs staff had a very helping hand for getting our bikes out
of the customs; it was the only place we had to stamp our carnet de passage. The
transport by plane for two XT600 (on one pallet) was a quite cheap transport alternative
with a secure arrival date.

("Babe and Yahoo
in S. America")
+
Around South-America.
"Babe
and Yahoo" rode on two Honda
Transalps 30.500 kms in 8 months.
This was our honeymoon. We rode around S-America with no fixed plan and very little
research beforehand. We like to take it as we find it. We were on 2 Honda Transalps
(1993 model) which we had previously bought in England (2nd hand) and ridden to
India and then shipped to Australia for 18 months. The bikes were old with ~80,000kms
on each before this trip. We had minimal preparation time but Transalps are reliable.
Our luggage was soft panniers we had made from buffalo skin in Pakistan. They
look rough but work really well and we prefer them to the hard ally panniers we
had before.
Route: We shipped the bikes from Sydney to Val Paraiso
in Chile where we got them out through the port in 1/2 day with no bribes and
not much trouble. We rode 30.500 kms in total taking minor roads and dirt tracks
where possible and avoiding highways: Chile: Santiago de Chile - Conception - Alto Bio
Bio cross-country to Lonquimay - Temuco - zig-zag through the Lake District crossing
between Chile & Argentina several times - south on Routa 40 in Argentina
to Perito Moreno National Park - El Chalten - Perito Moreno Glacier - Rio Gallegos
- cross to Chile to get to Tierra del Fuego then back to Argentina
to get to Ushuaia - back to Chile to go trekking in Torres del Paine National
Park - took boat from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt - south on Camino Austral
to Pichanco - back to Santiago by end of March. Santiago - cross to Argentina
- north to Paso Agua Negra back to Chile - Pisco Elqui - north to Paso
San Francisco back to Argentina - north to Cafayate - Salta - Paso Sico
back to Chile - San Pedro de Atacama - Iquique. Then on one bike north
to Peru - Tacna - Mazo Cruz - Desaguadero - Cusco - Inca Trail - Puerto
Maldonado (by plane) - Abancay - Camana - south along coast back to Chile
- Iquique by end of May - Back on 2 bikes - Iquique - Salar de Surire near Bolivian
border)- Putre - cross to Bolivia - Oruro - Potosi - Sucre - Toro Toro
National Park - Santa Cruz - San Ignacio - San Jose - Cochabamba - La Paz - Coroico
- Rurrenabaque - Riberalta - cross to Brazil - Porto Velho - by boat to
Manaus & Belem - Sao Luis - Jericoacoara - Acarau - Brazillia - Cascavel - Iguazu
- cross to Argentina - Salta - Paso Sico to Chile - San Pedro de
Atacama - Iquique by mid-September. We sold the bikes in Iquique which was easy
and we got a good price. Caught the bus back to Santiago & flew back to Aus.
Purpose of travel: Fun & adventure.
The best: Camping in the
Chile/Argentine Lake District, Perito Moreno Glacier, Camino Austral in the sun,
the high Andean Passes between N.Chile & Argentina, Jesuit missions in East Bolivia,
beach in Brazil, Iguazu.
The worst: Travelling with a guy who hit a
child in Bolivia. Endless problems getting out of Bolivia via the north, neck
trouble in Brazil.
Book or publication about the tour): .......
Useful informations and TIPS for others: Endless. Soft bags are good, bikes
can usually get through road blockades, get off the highways, it's amazing what
you can fix on the road, don't count on couriers to send you stuff you need,...

Info: Wir haben unsere Motorräder von Deutschland

die Maschinen dann verkauft. Es war eine fantastische Reise. Besonders beeindruckt
haben uns: Der wüste, karge Norden Chiles. Einsames Zelten in freier Natur.
Nasca-Linien. Das unglaublich grüne Ecuador.

Chile . Argentina. Liß, Hanka (German,
born 1965). Isenbügel, Frank (German, born 1966). Günther, Jens
(German, born 1967)
South: Hanka, Jens and Frank = "Isi" rode
on two BMW R 80 GS 10.000 km in Chile and Argentina. They flew their bikes to
Santiago and started in November to south. They rode fantastic gravel roads in
the Chilean and Argentina Lakes District among smoking vulcanos and deep blue
lakes (roads trough the P.N. Conguillio, P.N. Villarica, Paso Carirrine to Argentina,
P.N. Lanin and P.N. Los Alerces). At Coihaique the went back to Chile and hit
there on the great Carretera Austral. They rode trough the green rainforests in
P.N. Queulat and Parque Pumalin. For going north they shipped to Isla Chiloe and
then to the mainland at Puerto Montt. Bevore going back to Santiago they rode
around the Lago Llanquihue and visitesd the vulcano Osorno.
North: At
Christmas began in Santiago the second part of the travel. They followed the Panamericana
north in the hot and dry Atacama Desert. On New Years Eve they arrived at 4.300
above the sea level the world`s highest geyser field El Tatio near San Pedro de
Atacama. For crossing the Atacama Desert they used gravel roads and minig roads
from San Pedro de Atacama over the Salar de Atacama, Mina Escondida, Yungay (only
a cemetery) to Panamericana. After a few days on the beach in the pleasant P.N.
Pan de Azucar they started once more in the high Andes and rode from Chanaral
over La Ola and Maricunga to Lago Verde below the famous Paso San Francisco.
Purpose of travel: Discovering of land, people and nature
The best:
Riding on the Carretera Austral. Riding on the lonely high Andean roads among
magnificent scenery. A New Years dinner with Chilean Carabineros on 4.300 m altitude....
The worst: Chilenitis" - a verry devoted diarrhea...
Earlier
experiences: Hanka and Jens have been travelling several times in Australia
(see Australia). Therfore B.T, asked them:
Australia
or South-America again ? If we could only do ONE other mc-tour again we would
prefer Australia. It offers us the garanty for travelleing relaxed in a phantasitic
nature. A contact with friendly people and contact to the top-secret culture of
the world of the Aborigines. If we really would have time we would do our mc-tour
from 1999 again: Darwin - Kimberleys - Bungle Bungles - Broome - Pilbara - Cape
Range - Monkey Mia - area around Perth to the wild flowers and then continue to
Kalgoorlie - Warburton - Red Center - Uluru - Mac Donnell Ranges. In the end a
bit of relaxing and adventure in Queensland. Walikng by foot in Tasmania and visit
friends.
We can only write this after we discovered a part of South-America,
especilay Chile. We like Chile !

Argentina. Chile - Argentina (Feuerland). Martin
rode solo with HONDA AFRICA TWIN
Purpose: The reasen for this trip is disappear from this cracy, hectical
and inpersonal Germany for a while. Also I like to stay in the nature with my
tent and feel the quiet of untouched countries. That is the reason that I make
these long trips alone. Otherwise It's nice to see the life of other people and
cultures with totally different conditions. WE CAN LEARN THE WHOLE LIFE LONG
Route: I sent my motorcycle
by ship from Hamburg to Buenos Aires. I will fly by plane from Frankfurt. The
approximately route will be: Argentina (Buenos Aires) - Chile (Santiago de Chile).
Through Chile to the southmost point. Than back to Patagonia over the Andes and
down to Tierra del Fuego. From the southmost city of the world back to Buenos
Aires at the east coast of Argentina. The total kilometers will be around 8-10.000.
I'm looking forward to have a lot of great experiences. It must be a beautyul
country.
Wieder zurück in Argentinien
Silvester in
10.000 Gesamtkilometer,
davon 3.500 zum Teil sehr grobe Schotterpiste. Dezember und Januar bescherten
mir nur gutes Motorradwetter. Die Gastfreundschaft auf den einsamen Haciendas
war einmalig. Meine schon betagte Africa Twin funktionierte wiedermal problemlos.

Jörg Kauschke, (German, born 1963) and Bernd Hoffmann (German, born ??? )
+ South America.
Purpose of travel: Urlaub / Spass
Route: Von Valparaiso nach Uspalata (AR), Routa 40 nach norden ueber Jachal, Cafayate, Catchi nach Salta. Ueber Sico Pass nach San Pedro de Atacama (CL) weiter ueber Jama Pass zurueck nach Salta. Ueber Tucuman, Cordoba, Santa Rosa nach Viedma. Dort Motorrad treffen!!
The Worst: San Pedro de Atacama hatt mir gar nicht gefallen.

The mountains in the
Andes have beautiful colour, you can´t partly believe that it is real. If
you drive one of the passes, you are nearly alone. One day on a dirt track road
I met nobody the whole day (about 380km).
When I had my technical problems
(see the worst) a van stopped suddenly and three people tried to help
me. People always try to help you, also when your Spanish is not perfekt or you
don´t speak Spanish at all.
The worst: Puncture in the back tire
of the bike. The long and boring distances on the PamAm.

South-America. Silvia (Honda Africa Twin RD07. 1999. 55.000 km ) and
Martin (Honda Transalp PD06. 70.000 km) plan to visit a good portion of the South
American continent.
Purpose of your travel: We always were a bit envious
to people we've met who were on long journeys and dreamed to do something like
that. Because my employer does not need me in the near future we take the chance
to do a long trip and visit a continent we both feel attracted to and which will
be less likely to be visited in a shorter timeframe.
Route: Ship Bikes
to Equador, then visit Equador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile /Argentina. Be in Tierra
del Fuego around christmas / new years day. Then go up north and visit more parts
of Argentina /Chile. Be in Buenos Aires around april/ may, ship the bikes back
to Germany from BsAs.
Route not yet planned - you can't plan it exactly anyway
- suggestions welcome. In the moment planning focus is on bike and equipment preparation.
Highlights:
Still to come :-)
The worst: Also still to come. In the moment i'd
say planning is a nightmare - although we are no bike travel beginners....
Book
or publication: none so far but you never know...
Useful informations
and TIPS for others: I DO NOT AT ALL RECOMMEND A BMW 2 VALVE GS AS A SERIOUS
TROUBLE- FREE TRAVEL BIKE. THIS BIKE HAS BEEN MY MOST EXPENSIVE SO FAR AND THE
MOST DISAPPOINTING IN TERMS OF RELIABILITY AND COST. I bought it (which type ???)
with 30.000 km, sold it with 100.000 km and had many very serious and costly defects
and no-go's in the most unwelcome situations and remote areas. Who would for example
appreciate a gearbox breakdown in Libya or a shaft drive breakdown in the middle
of eastern Anatolia (both twice, also alternator 2x, starter 2x, ignition lock,
front rim, shock, hall sensor, regulator, rectifier, to name a few). And BMW Munich
would not even discuss about all those issues (Motto: millions of shit- eating
flies can't be wrong...) Also 3000 Euros in spare parts (not counting regular
maintenance) in 70.000km is not a lump sum...I'm done with BMW forever :-(((
Although
I loved that bike for it's driving capabilities I decided to change it for a used
Africa Twin which proved to be extremely reliable so far (it even did 55.000 km
on it's first chain kit, almost twice the distance of your average BMW gearbox
or shaft U-joint life)- knock on wood...

Purpose of travel: To see what happened within 10 years (Chris was there in Venezuela in 1996 already) later, to meet people and landscape again.
Route: Merida - cosat - Orinoco - Gran Sabana - ciudat Bolivar.
The best: Gran Sabana, traumhafte Landschaft, Tafelberge, Flüsse und kaum besiedelt.

South America. Argentina, Chile : a beginning (see further down 06.11.2007)
With two BMW F 650 GS Dakar Karen and Goetz rode 18.000 km in 2 (yes: just two!) different countries.
Purpose of travel: Changing continents. It took us years to prepare the takeoff for half a year during our main season.
The long and lonesome roads still do attract us. But unfortunately there´s fences everywhere! No more freeeee camping like Sibiria
Earlier Experiences of big Motorcycle-Tours: Together nearly all over Europe . Maximum 10.000 km a trip. Götz circled the world 1981-1983 by backpacking. Goetz rode alone Berlin > Northcape > Lake Baikal > Berlin , 26.500 km, in 2003. Karen and Goetz rode together Berlin - Central Asia - Berlin , 25.000 km, in 2004 (Search in this website). Russia and Mongolia 2005, 17.500 km. A wee circle in Europe filling gaps (Moldovia) in 2006, 10.000 km
Route : shipped bikes to Buenos Aires (BA) in nov 06. Followed by plane. Ruta 3 down to Ushuaia, ship to Antartica. Where it is NOT allowed to ride a motorcycle. Heading up the Andes north interchanging between Chile and Argentina (ruta 40). From Santiago de Chile a sidetrip to Easter Island (yessir, without bikes, toooo expensive). A trip into Atacama desert north and wayback to BA. There we left the bikes in a garage to be hauled out next time :)
The best: we learnt this time how to ship a bike. Argentina is like little Italy (Como te vaaa). Una persona que sepa el lenguaje entiende. No REALLY bad accidents.
The worst: many things broke down. Bikes, clothes, camping gear. http://www.n-tv.de/883860.html this was the ship which "rode" us to antartida 2006/2007. It went down the next season.

Dr. Alfons Sagenmüller(German, 3.9.1948)
+ Chile and Argentina. The approx 9,500 km-tour was done with rented bikes. Alfons used a BMW R 1150 GS and a German companion a BMW R 1200 GS.
Purpose of your travel: Sightseeing
Route: Starting point Iquique - Tocopilla - Calama - San Pedro de Atacama - Paso de Jama - Salta - Cafayate - Tinogasta - Fiambala - Paso de San Francisco - Copiapó - La Serena - Valle del Elqui - Valparaiso - Santiago - Curoco - Temuco - Villarica - Pucon - Valdivia - Osorno - Perto Varas - Ancud - Entre Lagos - Bariloche - San Martin de los Andes - Zapala - Gral Roca - San Rafael - Mendoza - Santiago (end point)
Highlights: the day tour from Fiambala via Paso de San Francisco on gravel road down to Copiapo - that we managed this without a fall down despite no experience with 'ripio'. As well to come back to places which I had been visiting with my familiy in earlier days namely either/or 1979, 1991, 1995 - trying to remember and assessing the change over time.
The worst: the bike did fall on my foot and caused some pain, but by fortune no bone broke
Book or publication (about your tour): slide show.

Sonja Ritter and Claudio Gnypek with one Aprilia Pegaso 650 in ??
06.12.2009 - 28.02.2010
Sonja Ritter (German, born 17.02.1974) and Claudio Gnypek (German, born 10.05.1972) www.pegasoreise.de
+ Brazil. Through Brazil in 3 months on one Aprilia Pegaso 650 ca. kms 8.500.
Purpose: To know more about Brazil and have a great adventure.
Route: We shipped the bike from Europe (Germany) to South America (Argentina (Buenos Aires). Buenos Aires – Uruguay over the Rio de la Plata . After 3 days (Colonial, Paysandu, Tacuarembo) we entered Brasil in Santana do Livramento. Rosario do Sul – Santa Maria – Caxias do Sul – Lages – Florianopolis – Curitiba – Blumenau – Matinhos – Morettes – Cananeias – Peruibe – Sao Jose dos Campos – Volta Redonda – Barra do Pirai – Rio de Janeiro – Teresopolis – Barbacena – Ouro Preto – Mariana – Santuario do Caraca – Sete Lagoas – Diamantina – Aracaui – Vitoria – Barra da Estiva – Chapada da Diamantina, Lencois – Cachoeira – Alagoinhas – Itaporanga – Sao Christovao – Praia do Diogo – Salvador. We could not ship the bike back (the Brazilian Custom is the worst), so we had to sell it.
Highlights: The journey was fantastic, the Brazilians extreme friendly and the land is beautiful. No accidents, no problems with thiefs or the police. Riding through the atlantic forest in Teresopolis, the village of Lencois, Cachoeira a mystic city in Bahia and of course, Rio de Janeiro.
The worst: Coming back to Germany...
My useful informations and TIPS for others: www.pegasoreise.de
We travelled with usual luggage including camping goods. We stayed on Campings (Yes, there are some in Brazil, 0 - 45 RS for two Persons), in cheap Hotels ("Pousadas", 25 - 60 RS) and in the houses of Brazilians who invited us (for free). The Bike was shipped with "Hamburg Süd" for 1000,- Euro from Hamburg to Buenos Aires. But we had no chance to ship it back from Brazil. The custom would not let it out. Why not ? We flew with TAM - Airlines for 1200,- Euro per Person (both ways).
My earlier experiences of big Motorcycle-Tours: East Europe, Balkan, Slowenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegowina, Serbia.

52. Motorcycle Meeting for World-Travellers
Info: Motorcycle-Travel-Club
Jorge Cuatrochio (Argentina) http://www.gratisweb.com/viajero_en_moto email: viajero_en_moto@LatinMail.com
Jorge is
top-organisator of a motorcycle-club for travellers in
Argentina in AZUL (about 300 kms south of Buenos Aires). This small
Moto-Club are very happy to receive foreign travellers for an exchange of thoughts
of life and travel. They offer hospitally and a bed free of charge. But you
guy should offer them a big present for this and NOT live on their money. Otherwise their wonderful gesture will not be there for many other motorcycle-travellers
in future. Since 06th.05.2001 they have a website.
Because Bernd Tesch helped
them to publish their idea and send some travellers there they send personal greetings
with presents back. In their rooms is hanging a sign on which is written that "I will once visit them". I think it I should travel there once... better yesterday...
. I promise to come in next 500 years..or earlier!
20.03.2003 Due to the very bad economical
situation the club needs financial support to keep their idea open. Bernd Tesch
collects constant money for them. So, please send 1 + x Euro to me. I will make
sure that the next South America traveller will transport the donates to them.
10.12.2003
SAmerica traveller Niklas Geiger asked me to collect money for the club because
they are in a very bad economically situation. Bernd Tesch did this on the "25th
Mc-Meeting for World-Travellers". German RTWorld Traveller Mika Kuhn gave
the money to Jorge. Jorge wrote me that he will run the club his whole life. Bernd
Tesch promised to support this unique idea a life long.
I
hope you liked reeding this. I am just waiting for YOUR email helping me to update:
