Peter
A. Graeml (Austrian, born 07.12.1955)
+ East Timor. Peter rode 1500 kms until June 2002 in East Timor with BMW R 100 GS. Welcome to
East Timor the first newborn state in the new millennium.
Purpose
of travel: Work with the United Nations in East Timor since April 2000.
Peter shipped his bike BMW R100GS from Toronto via Singapore to Dili after East-Canada
trip in 1999 (6500 kms from Toronto Prince Edward Island Halifax
return).
Highlights: Tropical island with lots of palm trees
and bananas, coconuts and papayas. Unspoiled coral reef and lonely sandy beaches.
Scuba diving with dolphins, mantas and sharks, whale watching. Excellent biking
possible in mountainous terrain.
The worst: Poor infrastructure after
civil war (poorest country in Asia). Malaria & Dengue Fever for everybody.
Tuberculosis spread amongst local population. HIV / AIDS already introduced.
Timor is the largest of the Lesser Sunda Islands located at the eastern
tip of the Indonesian archipelago approx. 650 km north of the Australian coast.
It is a tropical island approx. 9 degrees south of the equator with a wet season
from November to April. Temperatures range from 28 to 34 C throughout the year.
During the wet season the humidity is up to 80 %. The island is divided approx.
in the middle in a West Timor and an East Timor.
East Timors territory,
14,500 square kilometers in size, is about 265 kms from east to west and is dominated
by a central mountainous spine reaching 3,000 meters at its highest point. Most
roads throughout the Territory require four-wheel drive vehicles and are excellent
to drive with Enduro-style motorcycles. There are about 800,000 inhabitants, 200,000
living in the capital Dili. Official currency is the US Dollar. Official languages
are Portuguese and Tetum. About 60 % of the population also speaks Bahasa Indonesia.
English is understood mainly in Dili, in the rural areas communication is difficult.
Infrastructure: After the people of East Timor voted for independence on
30 August 1999 approx. 70 % of the infrastructure was destroyed, burnt and looted
by the Indonesian Army and militia groups. Up to now East Timor has not recovered
yet. Accommodations in various categories are available in Dili only ranging from
very primitive (USD 15/night to USD 160/night on a floating 4-star hotel
anchoring in the Dili harbor). Outside Dili accommodations are available only
in Baucau, the second-largest town. As tourism is non-existent (yet) there are
no camping facilities available. On the other hand wild-camping is not prohibited.
Since its declaration of independence on 20 May 2002 East Timor is considered
the poorest country in Asia.
Car/Bike rental: Car rental is available
through Australian based company (Thriffty) starting with USD 50/day upwards depending
on type of vehicle. (Small) bike/scooter rental available at various places. (Big)
bikes not available mine is the biggest one on the island!
What
to do: Snorkeling on the coral reef, scuba diving with charted yacht (equipment
available), lonely sandy beaches and lots of nature. Fri and Sat 2 discos operate
in Dili only apart from numerous coffee-shops and Asian-style restaurants. Outside
Dili there is pure nature, bush and millions of stars in the sky.
Medical
Services: Public hospital in Dili with some international doctors, medical
centers in rural areas providing limited services. Travel insurance including
emergency evacuation service recommended.
Diseases: Malaria and Dengue
Fever. Prophylaxes for short-term visitors recommended, otherwise common sense.
Tuberculosis is spread amongst the local population. HIV/Aids already introduced.
Security: In general calm (8,000 peacekeepers and 1,000 UN Civilian Police
still in country). Movements at night at the beach and remote areas recommended
in groups only, common sense.
Getting there: With Merpati-Airlines
daily from Denpasar/Bali to Dili for USD 360 return ticket. With Air North-Airlines
daily from Darwin/Australia to Dili for USD 250 return ticket.
On the road: Its like in the Wild West here. No traffic laws. No requirement for driving
licenses. No insurances. No technical inspections. No compulsory registration
of vehicles (although possible since April 2002 with a low standard technical
check) and of course NO mandatory helmet requirement. No recovery facilities.
No workshops outside Dili. In Dili itself ill equipped road-side mechanics. Fuel
available from Indonesian based company and Australian imported fuel for 45 US
cents per liter.

Meeting for World-Travellers

Ca. 4500 km in 5 Wochen.
Purpose: Urlaub.
The worst: Eine heftige Magen-Darm-Ggeschichte.
Alles an Impfungen rein, was geht. Also lasst Euch beraten, was an Vorbeugung oder Reiseapotheke sinnvoll ist.
Vor allem darauf achten, was man an Nahrung aufnimmt. Cook it, peal it or leave it.
Ca. 60 Rupien sind 1,- Euro, also übersichtliche Summen.

Vintern 1997
reste vi runt i Inden under 5 veckor. I Goa hyrde vi varsin Enfield 350. Vi blev
förälskade i dem direkt!
Iran, Turkiet, Rumänien Ungern Slovakien Tjeckien Polen Sverige.
Bertil & Bert

27.10.2003 Update: Betreff: Unerwartete Zwangsunterbrechung...
Vom Abbrechen meiner Reise also keine
So
Europa: Juni.2004 - 18.07.2004 Andreas with Lorrain (French. *1980 in Canada)

Norbert Berentz (German, birthday 02.05.1947)
- Around Asia. Norbert started solo with his BMW R 80 GS Basic his tour around Asia on June 2002. Until october 2005 he has covered 74.000 kms. He had one heavy accident in Latvia 3 days after his start. His thigh break right and total damage of bike. The end of of his travel starts with an accident in India / Punjab (hip-break, right pelvis). Norbert still wants to finish his overland tour westwards and wants to be home to Europe next.
PURPOSE OF TRAVEL: Do something good for myself (after loosing job and family).
ROUTE: From Germany eastwards across Poland, Lithuania, Latvia to Russia; here to St. Peterburg, Karelia, Archangelsk, 1000 km railway to Vorkuta (polar circle, short before Ural), with railway across Ural to Labytnangi, then with ferry boat about 2.500 km on river Ob (no money!) via Surgut to Novosibirsk; here visiting bikers meeting in July (Akademgorodok) and Altai mountains; then the long trail eastwards across Krasnojarsk, Irkutsk, Baikal, Ulan Ude and along the Transsib-railway to Cita and Never (Skorovodino); then upwards north to Jakutsk and along the Kolyma Trasse (via Tomtor, so called "summer Trasse") to Magadan; here looking for a ship to Kamchatka: first Manili in North, then Petropavlovsk in South Kamchatka; from here by ship 2000 km southwards to Vladivostok (along the Kuriles) and with help of the "Iron Tigers" per truck crossing the chinese border near Mudaniang, then driving at minus 15 degrees to Harbin (January) and then very quick to the warm and subtropi!
cal South-China via Shenyang, Beijing (mostly expressway, quick and safe but in China not allowed for two wheelers, sorry, but no problem). In Southeast China Guangzhou / Kanton, Nanning and Guilin. Then try to come with my bike (!) into Vietnam, but no success at all 5 border crosspoints - but a wonderful road along the Vietnamese border.
Border crossing to Laos (visa at arrival), 2 weeks short way to Thailand, then Malaysia (Penang!) and Peninsular Malaysia (Johor Bahru / Singapur), back to Thailand, Laos and then Vietnam (!), from the Laos side (possible, when you don't wait too long for the custom formalities, just drive after visa stamp); back to my beloved China (passing the astonished and not at all pleased Vietnamese border officers!) and across Chengdu, Lanzhou and Quinghai province (with lake) from north to Tibet (very fine road, no mountains and suddenly you are on 4500 m level !); no control or asking fo special Tibet permit, only friendly policemen and soldiers (they even lent me money to come to Lhasa!); from Lhasa the main road to Nepal (under construction! better take southern side road) along Mt. Everest base camp. Then via Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chittawan / Lumbini to India - and in the next two months via Pakistan, Iran, Tuerkey home to Europe (but that's all too normal).
Until now, short before Pakistan I have 74.000 km behind me (since Berlin) and maybe 15.000 km before me.
HIGHLIGHTS: I wanted to find new countries, people, cultures and now in India (after Pune and Osho experience) found to myself, better started the journey to myself, to my true inner self !! So it can happen in India, when you are mentally open for new experiences. Another highlight is the friendlyness and helpfulness of the Chinese, especially the chinese police (friend and helper in every critical situation); they like all foreigners and enjoy their new freedoms (on their way to an open society and democracy!).
THE WORST: That two heavy accidents at start and ending of my travel, but also that lighter ones in between - that indeed is the biggest risk and danger for every biker, nothing else ! Tsunami and earthqake in Kashmir did not reach me just in time, I had passed this areas already. And last not least that fucking not ending repairs: for ex. 7 times (!) the crankshaft, 13 times because of no charging function for my battery (indian workshops are the worst workshops, they are learning by doing and try and error - in my BMW case mostly error!).
Norbert tried to enter Pakistan coming from India with valuable Carnet des Passage. They did NOT let him in at the "Mustergrenze" Wagah-Border". So he had to retutn by plane leaving the motorcycle in India.
BOOKS OR PUBLICATIONS are not planned - why should I ? Only problems to find a publisher because the "market" is full with that stuff and everybody experiences in a different way - I did it my way and that was good for me and for nobody else.
TIPS FOR OTHERS: Don't worry about coming into China, Vietnam or maybe other problems (custom, Carnet, etc.); just "drive and see" (my motto), be optimist and have another option in case of no success; things change every year and all time and most for the better. And in Russia and China it is very useful / helpful, to meet some journalists (they are keen on you), so that you have one good newspaper-article with your foto in your pocket (I had more than 10 different), because not everyone there in the province does speak english - but they like you, they invite you and thus they can know you a little (with full biography!).
No earlier big motocycle tours.

Georg Hofmann
- Plan China. Silkroad. Georg
has the private plan to ride solo the silkroad. Because he is working in China
for a German firm, he prepares the tour from China being there sometimes.
29.10.2002 Georg wrote from Yinchuan/China.
1. ich habe 1-Jahresaufenthalts-Erlaubnis
Also grad das richtige,

+ "Tusche" rode with Suai ??? km overland from ?? to ?? in 8 months. The sidecar-motorcyle I got in thailand from my family. It was a thai-style -Ural. I have no idea what it really was. But it worked.
Purpose of your travel: See all the great things of the history of thailand. Visit the border to laos and cambodia.
Route : Europe (Germany (Alfter - Frankfurt) by plane to Asia (Tahiland (Bangkok - by motorcycle to Chang Mai - Chang Rai - NorthEast of Thailand - Bangkok - Suranthani - Bangkok) - by plane or motorcycle to Germany ???
Highlights: The whole trip, if you like the asian style of life!!
The worst: Nothing, but be carefull in malaria or dengue-fever. I got it after the trip in 2005, and I was near to death. Be carefull and use all the protection you can get against moscitos.
Book or publication no
My useful informations and TIPS for others: Never! Never!! rode a bike during nighttime. It is totally differnt to the the situation you know in europe.Be prepared to stop your bike immediatley in every situation. Anne Stapsy (American, July 24/1939) and John Stapsy (American, Mar 9, 1946) Both organised tour: www.ridetour.com
+ China East -West in 2003 and 2004. Anne and John rode about 3.000 miles in 35 days on one BMW 1150GS (2000) from Shanghai to Urumuqi in April/May 2003 with three other bikes (two couples and one single rider, one 2000/1150GS and two 2003 1150GSAdventure).
We had a National Guide all the way through the trip (can not travel without one) and an additional local guide and driver for each province. Also a must have for any trip in China. We had five paying clients that went with us.
Purpose of travel: Fun, meeting people and seeing the vanishing culture of the western end of China.
Route: Asia (China: Shanghai>Nanjing 352KM (218.60 miles) National Road 312 -- Nanjing>Xuzhou 359KM (222.94 miles) NR104 -- Xuzhou >Zhengzhou 351KM (217.98 miles) NR310 -- Luoyang>Xian 446KM (276.97 miles) NR310 -- Xian>Pingliang 307KM (190.65 miles) NR 312 -- Pingliang>Lanzhou 380KM (235.98 miles) -- Lanzhou>Xining 240KM (149.04 miles) NR109 -- Xining>Zhangye 347KM (215.49 miles) NR227 -- Zhangye>Jiayuguan 243KM (150.91 miles) NR312 -- Jiayuguan>Dunhuang 383KM (237.85 miles) NR312+ 313 -- Dunhuang>Hami 437KM (271.38 miles) NR215 to Liuyuan and NR312 -- Hami >Turpan 410KM (254.61 miles) NR312 -- Turpan>Korla 377KM (234.12 miles) NR314 -- Korla>Urumqi 461KM (286.29 miles) NR314+312.
Bikes were shipped by boat from USA (Los Angeles California) to China (Shanghai) and back to Los Angeles after the trip. Group flew from LAX to Shanghai and back to Los Angeles from Beijing. We did not get into the city of Beijing due to SARS. Only what could be carried on the bikes was taken by each person. Made it interesting for the three of us ridding two up.
Highlights: Having China to ourselves as it was in the middle of the SARS outbreak. The country was closed to groups from outside of China and inter-province travel by the Chinese had been stopped. We got in under the wire. Multiple SARS checks a day and the fear at the end of the trip of not passing the temp test. Having all of the national cultural sites to ourselves.
Worst: One accident that resulted in cracked ribs, damaged bike (but after 24 hours with a Moto team in a small village) repairable enough to continue ride, two mild concussions and neck and back pain. Nothing like being layered in Kevlar and everyone should at visit a Chinese Military Hospital at least once in their lives. Chinese neck braces are quite unusual.
Useful information/TIPS: Dont try to get into China without the proper paperwork. Not an easy job. Hook up with a group that is familiar with the Chinese Government and go with Government approval. Check out our web site. It took about two years of interaction with the Chinese authorities and two visits without bike to organize and get permission for the trip. Antibiotics and pain medication a must for any trip outside your own area.
We hear about people who have ridden in China, but in the last few years it has become almost impossible to get into the country without the proper paperwork. The risk of having your bike confiscated is big.
We got an invitation from the Chinese Government for our group, Chinese Plates and Driver License for each rider. These papers along with the standard passports were checked with regularity. There are even harsher laws with regard to motorcycles in China since our trip. These large bikes are not allowed on the main highways and they are not allowed in the bigger cities like Shanghai and Beijing. We had to use "truck/lorry roads for most of the trip. China does not want motorcycles in their country. The trip is long for most people as it takes them away from their jobs for too long and it is expensive due to the cost of shipping the bikes, the cost of the guides and if you have a much larger group the cost would be even higher as it would involve being escorted through each major city by a police escort. Although it is expensive, our clients felt that it was one of the best tours they had been on and these people have traveled with their bikes through most of the world. I think that it was also the country with some of the worst roads they had seen yet. Not a trip for week end bikers.
Publication: There was one article about the trip in BMW owners magazine, the August 2003 issue. Not very well written, but adequate.
Earlier Experience: John traveling in 2000 from Japan to Germany on same bike.

Finally he rode through Japan - Russia back to Europe. in 30 months he rode 98.000 kms. It has been all different during the trip. - Russia (Moskow- Novosibirsk - Irkutsk - Chita - Khabarovsk - Vladivostok). On the way back the bike went to Moskow by train. I took the plane and rode back home from Moskow in 2,5 days.
The best: Reaching Vladivostok just in time for the first bike meeting "Facing the ocean". The Russian people and landscape!
The worst: Moskitos and the mistake of travelling with more than one person...
Important useful informations for others: Don't listen to others - Russia is great! And the road from Chita to Khabarovsk is no problem anymore

Susi Boxberg (German, born 1961) and Achim Schmitt (German, born 1969) www.zweizeit.de.vu
+ Europa > Asia. Germany > Vladivostok. Susi (BMW F 650 GS) and Achim (Honda Africa Twin) rode 13.500 km from Germany (Cologne) to Russsia (Vladivostok) within 3 months.
Route: Germany - Poland - Latvia - Lithuania - Russia (Moscow - Kazan - Perm - Ekatarinenburg - Omsk - Novosibirsk - Krasnojarsk - Irkutsk - Ulan Ude - Tchita - Chabarowsk - Vladivostok). We flew back to Moscow and we shipped the bikes back to Moscow by train. From Moscow we drove back home (3.000 km).
Achim rode the full part from Tchita to Chabarowsk along the Amur River, Susi took the train !!
Purpose of travel: Curiosity. We both were infected by the travelling virus after our Africa Tour. And we hadn't anything special to do that summer in 2003. So we decided to go to Vladivostok and join the 1st Motorcycle Travellers Meeting "Facing the Ocean" in Nachodka near Vladivostok.
There have been in total ca. 550 out of the whole country including 7 Germans (including Mika Kuhn), one Polish man, one from Ukraine, one from Italy
Highlights: Staying three month in Russia and getting to know the life there. Meeting other travellers and russian biker. Lake Baikal.
The worst: Russian bureaucracy.
Book or publication (about your tour): A travel report will be published in a book of Bruckmann-Verlag "Die 10 größten Motorrad-Touren" in spring 2004.

Götz Stahlschmidt
(German, 04.07.1960), no website
+ Germany -
Russia- Germany. Götz rode solo in Europe and Asia some 26.500
km on Yamaha XJ 900.
Purpose of travel: Long and open roads really
attract me. When I watched the slide show of Daphne and Rob de Jong at the 25th
Tesch Travel Meeting I started weeping when I saw the pictures of Siberia. I talked
to Daphne and Rob after the show. Their statements helped me a lot. My soul had
to leave and my heart had to return.
Planned route at first: Karen
and Götz planned to ride with one HONDA XJ 900 enduro.
Route: Germany (Berlin)
- Poland - Slovakia - Hungaria - Romania - Turkey - Georgia - Armenia - Aserbaijan
and back.
Done route: Germany (Berlin) - Sweden - Norway - Russia -
Ukraine - Poland - Germany (Berlin).
Itinerary: Stockholm - Kiruna - Lofotes
- Northcape - Murmansk - Arkhangelsk - Vladimir - Nizhny Novgorod Kazan - Perm
- Yekaterinburg - Omsk - Novosibirsk - Krasnoyarsk - Southern shore of Lake Baikal.
Return. via Krasnoyarsk - Altai. The region, where China meets Russia meets Kasachstan
meets Mongolia. Back to Novosibirsk - Omsk - Tshelyabinsk - Ufa - Samara - Orel.
Lacking a visa for Belarus but having the Ukrainian I had to return via Kiev -
Lviv - Krakow to Berlin.
Highlights: Listening to life music at night
at a Russian military base in Siberia together with the commander of the base.
The landsape of the Altai.
Riding XJ 900 in the mud with about 60 kg of luggage/fuel/water
without hitting the ground.
The Worst: Partly corrupt cops in Ukraine
(Welcome back to Europe, haha, no worries in Russia at all).
Medium sized
Russian towns without culturel background. Worst town is Nikel. I cite Lonely
Planet: "Even the slums of teeming Indian cities emit some sense of hope,
while this particular suburb of hell seems to be past despising its own condition."
Riding straight into the ditch on a straightforward tarmac road. (don´t
you watch the birds too long!)
Books or publications: none
Usefull
information and TIPS for others: General tips for beginners: read http://www.horizonsunlimited/tripplan/living/.
Buy "Moto-Pack" from Bernd Tesch if you can read German. Any motorcycle
is the right motorcycle. It will show you the right road.
Especially Russia: if you want to go there, learn as much Russian as you can. First of all learn
to read cyrillic. I recommend Lonely Planet Russian phrase book plus a grammar
in your mothers tongue for those who want to go deeper into the stuff. Take along
spareparts going to Sibiria. East of Novosibirsk you won´t find anything
until Vladivostok. Unless you ride a russian model.
How to open doors: I was
often asked in Russian if I was riding alone. I replied yes. Next question you
are not afraid? I answered why should I, I am in Russia. Works in many cases.
Common sense makes you recognize the bad guys.
Earlier Experiences of big

- Overland to India. Martin plans to travel solo overland to India with a BMW R 100 GS.
In lack
of to much time and the rather spontanious attempt at trying to realise an eternal
personal dream, I do remember two central sayings in India. They seem to me like
THE pips of the Asian fruit. They say: "Maybe shure", by shaking their
head in many directions and "plans are changing. All the time".
Route: Europe (Germany - Les Alpes - Italy (ferry, no Balkan) - Greece - Turkey)
- Asia (Iran 10.09.2003 - Pakistan 19.09.2003 - India 27.09.2003) : - by plane
back to Germany.
Earlier eperiences: Experienced in travelling by bike,
horse, foot and thumb since 1988. Europe, North Africa, Turkey and South East
Asia. Motto: Do it, before you`ll miss it.

27.01.2004 Dear Bernd and Patti
Dafne has send you
a letter did you received it? Anyway we are fine and yesterday we crossed Lake
Baikal> The first ones this year and as I understood well I was the firts solo
biker who did this ever. The ice is not thick but strong enough for us. We drank
the last drop of your RUM (Thanks again) with a forrester in the hamlet of Dasha.
Dasha is a very remote 30 houses villages at the shore of Lake Baikal and can
only be reached by boat (in summer) or over the ice (NOT IN SUMMER). We took some
mail with us from Dasha to be posted in Severobaikalsk. We spend the night on
the ice in our tent. The lake was making a lot of noises during the night on to
be honest I was not very sleepy that night.
We are fine and maybe we will
pass on our way back to Holland in Februar
24.-25.02.2004 Dafne and Rob were
another time our guests at home in Hammer and stayed the last day / night with
us before they wenr home safely after their Siberia-mc-tour.
16.-18.04.2004
They offered me kindly to give a slide-show at the "26th. Motorcycle-Meeting
for World-Travellers":
Jong, Dafne and Rob. "Siberia
= Icefresh = Eisfrisch". www.OverhetIJS.nl and www.ICEride.com They rode 11.000
kms on roads, plus 1.000 kms on lake Baikal in Russia and another 1.000 kms on
frozen rivers with temperatures down to - 38°C. Both were sponsored by YAMAHA
Netherlands with two YAMAHA XT 600 E. Dafne and Rob had the idea to attach a sidecar
to one XT and additionally to have the chance to fix the other XT to the sidecar.
So they had "two-wheel-drive" on the ice. German Helmut Herrmann from
STERN-Gespanne http://www.gespannservice.de sponsored them by realising this idea.
Route: NL- Germany - Tchechei - Poland
- Belarussia - Russia and back. One of the Highlights was to ride on ice on lake
Baikal (650 long and max 70 kms wide) where nobody has been before.

The worst: burocracy, checkpoints, accident, theft.

Useful informations and TIPS for others: Take along enough time. Nearly 5 months seems to be a long time. But with hindsight
it wasn´t. Stay calm. Learn some Russian beforehand.
Earlier Experiences

a trip. Götz rode alone Berlin > Northcape > Baikal Berlin, 26.500
km, in 2003.
03.10.2004 Here a part of their summary of their new route:
Germany > Ex-Sowejtunion > Turkmenistan > Turkey:Taschkent > Visum
für gen Turkmenistan als "letzte ??" bewillligt bekommen. Somit
verschiedene Papiere, 14 verschiedene Stempel, 10 verschiedene Unterschriften
(unsere eigenen NICHT eingerechnet). 94 U$ pro Nase und 3 Std. spaeter waren wýr
drin. 4 Tage Transit durch die Wueste. 1200 km mit 30 (i.W. dreissýg) Polizeikontollen.
harhahah. Solchen Versprechungen sollte man NICHT glauben. Haben uns daher fuer
Transitvisaum entschieden. (Dass dýe Dreckssau von aserbaýdschanýschen
Botschafter ýn Taschkent 60 U$ pro Nase fuer 30 Tage Visum pro natuerlicher
Goil
Menschen: eýne
wirklich andere Rasse. Kaukasisch halt.
Georgien: Nach 2 Tagen Transit
Georgien:
Back to Georgia we met the georgýan biker.
gewandelt. Lederhosen und geschlossene Jacken sind wieder angesagt. Ach ja, das
zweýte Kuehlerleck bei Goetz wurde erfolgreich geflickt. Dafuer ist heute
das dritte aufgetreten. Irgendwie ein Schwachpunkt an der Karre. Zottelt auf an
den Nerven. Aber wir werden auch dieses ueberstehen.
Wir sind ja bald wieder
in Europa. Da koennte man dann ja die Moppeds ohne Zollprobleme verkaufen
und vom Erloes weiterreisen...

+ Russland- Baikal.
Per Motorrad Petersburg – Rybinsk – Ufa – Tscherljabinsk – Novosibirsk – Irkutsk - Ulan-Ude. Mit Motorrad und Person in der Transsib bis Moskau – Petersburg. Zurück mit der Fähre Finnjet nach Germany (Rostock).
The best: Die Fahrt dorthin.
The worst: Nichts!
Book or publication: Vorträge, kostenlose Motorradzeitschriften.

Myanmar. Markus rode Around The World (see below). Actually he returned
from 5 weeks travelling through Myanmar
Purpose of your travel: Relaxing,
meeting people, fun.
Route: This time Markus rented a Honda 250 in Yangon.
Because Motorcycles are not allowed in Yangon (only police and military), he was
brought out of town with a PickUp Truck. Then via Bago to Toungoo, in the Jungle
of Bago Yoma to see working elephants. North via Jamethin to Kalaw in the Mountains
of the southern Shan State. Then to the beautiful Inle Lake. Road 411 north, to
Pyin U Lwin, then to picturesque Hsipaw. To Mandalay, and to the Pagodes of Bagan,
after 4 1/2 weeks back to Yangon. Although I was the only motorcycle on the road
in Yangon and didnt get stopped.
Highlights: The people of Myanmar
are beautiful, friendly, interested and helpful a great unspoiled country
The worst: I had to go back to Germany
Useful informations and
TIPS for others: Loose (German) guidebook is far better than Lonely Planet
and Reise Know How! For driving you need an international driving-licence.

from Darmstadt via Russia, Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, then from South Africa
via Ethiopia back home. With Yamaha XT 600 E, 102.500 kms. He travelled RTW with
Christopher Hirt, XT 600 E.
In addition: India, Australia, New Zealand, Oman.
08.02.2005 B.T. Out of my knowledge Markus is the very first in
this time who could travel by himself with a motorcycle in Myanmar.
Alles wieder i.O. Foto: Paul Stefano Fuchs (C).

Foto: Paul Stefano Fuchs (C).
